AP Human Geography To start class, you will go around and talk to 2 different people about the news stories they got for their homework. I will give you 5 minutes to talk to different people. Then, you will come back to your computer and write a 3 SENTENCE MINIMUM summary of the stories your classmates told you about at the bottom of your article. If you did not do your homework, get a textbook and read pgs Your answer to the question “Where do people migrate?” is due next class. After that, I will tell you how to turn in your article on the website houstonisd.org/hub

Immigration to the United States, 19th-21st centuries

Early 19th century (1800’s) Immigration to the US was mainly from Western Europe Great Britain, France, Ireland Chain migration—The Founding Fathers and other early colonists were from Western Europe Potato Famine and poverty— Led to Irish immigration Today, there is still a large Irish population on the East Coast

Discrimination—Many Irish faced heavy discrimination
Seen as uneducated, worked mainly in manual labor

Immigration mainly from Eastern Europe Italy (this is when the mafia started!), Balkan countries… Poverty—Eastern Europe was not as industrialized World War I—People fleeing violence Also, growing amount of Asian immigration…

1920’s—Quota System Quota—A limit on the amount of immigrants allowed from a certain region Americans became concerned about too many immigrants coming into the US Quotas put on immigrants from Eastern Europe (racist?) Immigration from Asia completely stopped, no Chinese immigration allowed (definitely racist)

Main source regions: Latin America (mainly Mexico) and Asia Main push factor— Poverty Also—population problems due to high growth in LDC’s and environmental degradation (destruction)
