Discuss in your teams (write down everything you know about) the following:
May look at figures in box to give you some ideas. Geometric Solid: Face of a solid: Lateral Faces of a solid: Prisms: Pyramids: Regular Pyramid: Height of Pyramid: Slant Height of Pyramid: Cylinders: Cones: Edges of a solid: Vertices of a solid: Net of a solid:
2
Geometric Solids Geometric Solid : A 3-dimensional (3D) figure that encloses space. Sides : polygons Bases : polygons or circles Faces of a solid: sides of polygons
3
Types of solids: 1) Prism a) 2 congruent bases (polygons of any shape), b) all faces are rectangles c) named by shape of base Lateral faces – faces that are NOT bases Lateral area – sum of areas of lateral faces Examples: Rectangular Prism Triangular Prism Cube
4
2) Pyramid a) 1 base of any polygon
b) All faces are triangles Examples: Square Pyramid, Triangular Pyramid, Pentagonal Pyramid Height of pyramid: Perpendicular distance from base to faces common vertex Regular Pyramid : Base is regular polygon Faces are congruent, isosceles triangles Slant height: height of triangular faces in regular polygon
5
3. Cylinder – 2 Bases that must be
a) circular b) congruent c) parallel Lateral face : curved surface (not the circles) Example: 4. Cone – 1 circular base Example
6
Edges: segments that faces of a prism or pyramid share
Vertices: Points where edges meet Net: The flat drawing of a solid – - can create net by cutting along edges of solid and folding faces down flat.
7
Review these terms with your team - Discuss - 2 minutes
Geometric Solid: Face of a solid: Lateral Faces of a solid: Prisms: Pyramids: Regular Pyramid: Height of Pyramid: Slant Height of Pyramid: Cylinders: Cones: Edges of a solid: Vertices of a solid: Net of a solid:
8
Area of ALL lateral faces Surface Area:
Polyhedra: 3D Flat faces Straight edges NO CURVES Lateral Area: Area of ALL lateral faces Surface Area: the sum of the areas of all the surfaces. *** Use nets to find surface area

Examples: ft p. 541, # ft 12 ft SA = Front + back + left + right + top + bottom SA = SA = (lh) + (lh) + (wh) + (wh) + (lw) + (lw) SA = (12)(2) + (12)(2) + (9)(2) + (9)(2) + (12)(9) + (12)(9) SA = SA = 300 ft2
10
SA = 471 in2 #4 8in 11 in. SA = Top + bottom + side SA = + +
NOTE: in net of cylinder, side is rectangle, so area of side is lw of that rectangle. Length = circumference of top, width = height of cylinder SA = 471 in2
11
#5 13 cm 12 cm 4 cm 5 cm SA = Front + back + right + left + bottom SA = SA = SA = 180 cm2
12
SA = Front + back + right + left + bottom
p.547, #3 15 in 16 in 16 in SA = Front + back + right + left + bottom SA = SA = 736 in2
