1 Setting-up G-POD @ ESAC
A precursor to a distributed web of processing services Fernando Félix-Redondo On behalf of the SMOS DPGS Operations Team

2 Contents What is SMOS mission about? SMOS DPGS resources @ ESAC
SMOS Testbed & G-POD How to extend G-POD to ESAC without disturbing too much? Devised Architecture Technologies Devised Architecture (II) Plan SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

3 SMOS Mission Part of the EO Exploratory Programme
It was launched in 2009 SMOS observes two key variables: Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity Development of climatological, meteorological and hydrological models of the Earth. Platform: Proteus, developed by CNES Payload: MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis) SMOS Ground Segment Satellite Operations Ground Segment (CNES) Data Processing Ground Segment (ESAC) including payload operations and data distribution Long Term Archive (Kiruna) Acquisition (Svalbard, ESAC) SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

4 SMOS DPGS resources@ESAC
Data Processing Ground Segment FOS SPGF, SMOS Plan Generation Facility PLPC, Payload Programming Centre XBAS It acquires 3 to 4 passes daily SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

5 SMOS DPGS resources@ESAC (II)
PDPC, Payload Data Processing Centre FPC Archive NRT Data Processing Facility FRP, Fast Reprocessing Platform customisation of the PDPC/FPC for the off-line reprocessing campaigns Powerful systems Most of the time, it is …idle This platform constitutes the hardware infrastructure where the G-POD node will be installed on. SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

6 GPOD & SMOS Testbed SMOS L1 and L2 processors are already installed in G-POD L0, L1 and ADFs production from to (~25GB daily and 200 products) SMOS Raw Data only at ESAC (L0 reprocessing) Regardless other considerations, it makes sense to extend the computational facility to ESAC SMOS produces 7-8 Gbytes raw data daily Complete daily L0, L1 and ADFs production is distributed from to ESAC is the only site where original telemetry files are archived (L0 reprocessing) SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

7 How to extend GPOD to ESAC without disturbing too much?
Advantages Constraints A powerful computational infrastructure (FRP) underutilized Direct access to all mission´s data including raw telemetry files FRP must keep carrying out future reprocessing campaigns with same performance (20:1) A third-party company is in charge of FRP´s software mainteinance How can we conciliate both sides of this table? Virtualization Cloud SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

8 Devised Architecture (I)
SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

9 Our technology choices
Why these ones? Old and fruitful relationship with OpenNebula creators (gridway) OpenNebula is already used in other ESA projects (HelixNebula) OpenNebula allows the configuration of hybrid clouds KVM: Price Trust Know-How SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

10 Devised Architecture (II)
SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

11 Project Terradue will lead the project for extending GPOD to ESAC
ISDEFE will deploy and operate the GPOD node and infrastructure in ESAC Kick-off meeting will be held next 30th January SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013

12 If (end_of_presentation() == ‘yes’) say(“Thanks!”);
If (hands_up() == 0) say(“Questions?”); SMOS DPGS Ops Team ESRIN, HMA AWG Meeting #1 2013
