John was baptizing in the Jordan River He baptized with water, but proclaimed Jesus would baptize them with the Holy Spirit. John knew that people came to be baptized because they wanted a new spiritual life. John did not want to baptize Jesus. He said he wasn’t worthy to untie Jesus’ sandals, much less baptize Him!

4 Jesus’ Baptism Jesus’ mission began with His baptism.
The heavens opened and God spoke: “This is my Son with whom I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17 Jesus’ mission began with His baptism.

An Apostle is one of the 12 men chosen by Jesus

8 The Kingdom of God Jesus’ mission involved teaching about and starting to build the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God is…. The power of God’s love active in our lives and in the world. Jesus knew He needed to “train” people to carry on His mission after He returned to Heaven. He chose the 12 Apostles for this job.

10 Apostles The Apostles spent a lot of time with Jesus.
Jesus was closest to Peter, James (the lesser), and John. They were supposed to learn from Jesus so they could continue His mission once He ascended into Heaven. Jesus made Peter the first Pope when He gave him the keys to Heaven. Matthew 16:17-19

11 The Church (capital C) Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit came. Acts 2: 1-13 The Church’s mission is to… Share the Good News and Spread the Kingdom of God.

12 How does the Church carry out this mission?
Evangelize (religion book page 34) Prayer – personal and public Learning about Christ and our faith Witnessing Christ in word and Action Witnessing Christ means showing others Christ by how we treat them and how we act.

Celebrate the Paschal Mystery Strengthen our faith and mission

14 Mass Mass is communal (community)/public prayer that brings God’s people together. Mass is the most important prayer we participate in, but it should not be the largest amount of time we spend praying throughout the week.

15 The Body of Christ The Church (the people) is the Body of Christ (His hands/arms/legs). We MUST be Christ to the world The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy help us be Christ to the world. (religion book page 39)

16 Paschal Mystery The Paschal Mystery is Christ’s passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension. The Paschal Mystery saves us and allows us to get to Heaven. Paschal comes from the Passover Lamb Exodus 12 Paschal is another way to call Jesus the Lamb of God.
