Mitosis, meiosis, test cross and other Punnett squares
Exam 4 Mitosis, meiosis, test cross and other Punnett squares
2
Are you my father? Suppose your yellow lab gets out one night. Some time later, you notice that she is pregnant with puppies. When the puppies are born, you perform a test cross to determine what the dad looked like. Use the following when creating your Punnett square: bb- yellow labs, BB- black labs, and Bb-chocolate labs
3
Dihybrid Punnett Squares
You are studying fish, and want to predict the phenotypes of them. You start to take note of the characteristics you see, to help you make your Punnett square. You decide that they are two traits you want to focus on: scale color and scale shine. Fish with an orange color are dominant, while fish with a yellow color are recessive. And fish with reflective scales are dominant, while fish with dull scales are recessive. Complete the Punnett square with the phenotypic ratio you predict.
4
Mitosis What are the steps involved in Mitosis? Draw them out and explain the important things that occur in each step!
5
Meiosis What are the steps involved in Meiosis 1 and 2? Draw the steps and explain any important factors that occur in each step. BE CAREFUL! Check that the drawing of your chromosomes is accurate based on what step you’re in.
6
Is this what you had?
7
More Punnett square work
A woman who is colorblind, marries a man that is not color blind. Can her sons display colorblindness? Why or why not? Yes, in fact they all will show it! Since dad will give a Y, mom will give her “colorblind” X This is an example of an X-linked disorder in which the recessive trait is held on the X chromosomes
8
Complete this Punnett square for sex-linked (x linked) diseases
Cross Parent 1: XAXa with Parent 2: XAY A is dominant, a is recessive Explain which children are affected, which are carriers and which are unaffected
9
Calico cats display what kind of chromosome? Explain
Inactive X chromosome, where one X chromosome from the female does not express its alleles.
