Epithelial Tissues Epithelial – the lining (or covering) of the body and organs Apical surface – the exterior surface of an epithelial tissue (near the white of the slide) Basement membrane – the lower surface of an epithelial tissue

Two types of layers Simple – one layer Stratified – more than one layer Types of tissues: Squamous – flat (egg shaped) Cuboidal – cube shaped Columnar – column shaped Nuclei are arranged in a row

Pseudostratified Pseudo – false Nuclei are scattered Transitional – Changes or transforms from one type of tissue to another; apical cells are lobed shaped

Simple squamous – capillaries and air sacs of lungs Simple cuboidal – pancreas and ovaries Simple columnar – stomach and intestines
