2. Great Fire of London
On Sunday September 2nd 1666 a fire broke out at a bakery in Pudding Lane The bakers maid forgot to put out the ovens. The heat from the ovens caused sparks to set fire to the wooden bakery building. She tried to escape but couldn’t.

3. Question
What do we have in our houses now that the Bakery didn’t have in 1666? Clue: It gives us early warning to get out if a fire happens
Ask students the question and remind them to put their hands up to answer.
Show them real life smoke alarms and explain that they come in different designs and sizes. Let them hear the noise it makes.
Explain that they should have 1 in the downstairs and 1 in the upstairs of their house.
Ask children to check when they go home and to let a grown up – like their teacher - know if there’s not one there.
Explain we can come to their house and make it safer from fire by putting up a smoke alarm

4. Escape Plan
Explain what an escape plan is for – to help all their family escape if a fire happens in the house.
Explain: if you are woken up by the sound of your smoke alarm or by the sound of what you think is a fire, remember:
Stay calm. Wake all the members of your family.
Make your way out all together, through the nearest exit.
Do not open any doors other than the ones you need to escape through.
If a door feels hot DO NOT open it.
When everyone is safely outside call 999 from a public telephone or a neighbour's house.
DO NOT GO BACK TO THE HOUSE for any reason until the Fire Service tell you it is safe to return.
Remember the rhyme to help you remember what to do - ‘get out, stay out, call the fire service out’. Repeat after me…………….. Repeat rhyme
If the fire is blocking your way or you cannot use the stairs for any reason, you must:
Get down on your hands and knees and crawl under any smoke. Smoke from fires can kill you if you breathe it in.
All the family should be in the same room.
When everyone is safely outside call 999 from a public telephone or a neighbour's house
If you are trapped by smoke and cannot escape you must:
Close the door.
Block any gaps into the room. Use towels, blankets or spare clothes.
If there is a telephone in the room dial 999.
If there is no telephone, go to the window and shout for help.
Once you know you have been heard and help is on the way, stay near to the floor by the window.
If your clothes catch fire – STOP, DROP and ROLL.

5. Great Fire of London
The fire spread very quickly because all of the houses were built from wood.
Strong wind made the fire spread even quicker.
There were no firefighters in those days

6. The Great Fire of London
Firefighting at the time was very basic and there was little skill or knowledge involved. They used leather buckets, axes and water squirts which had little effect on the fire.
Read the slide then expand to tell the story:
People tried to put the fire out with buckets of water. It didn’t really do much good because they couldn’t carry the water quick enough.
On the 2nd day of the fire, the fire was so hot that St. Paul’s cathedral caught on fire and the lead on the roof melted.
To try and stop the fire from spreading people pulled the houses down.
Eventually after 4 days the wind changed direction and the fire went out.
13 thousand 200 houses burnt down in the fire started by the oven.

7. What can cause fires
What things can you think of in your house that might start a fire?
We learnt at the beginning of the story that the Great fire of London was caused because the maid left the oven on in the night.
Ask the question on the slide to the group, remind pupils to put up their hand to answer the question, if they are correct give them the associated picture to hold
Tell the group what the most dangerous room in the house is – the kitchen because that is where most fires start.

Unlike in 1666 our Fire and Rescue Service has modern fire engines with lots of equipment, firefighters have flame retardant suits to protect them.
But we would prefer we didn’t have to use them. We want you and your families to be safe from fire.

13. What Keeps us Safe?
You and your family can keep yourselves safe by having an escape plan and a working smoke alarm in your house.
Remember to ask a grown up to test your smoke alarm to make sure it’s working and remember if you haven’t got one let your teacher know and we can come and put one in your house.
