1 Right Now Copy down your homework Take out your notebook

2 Unit 2: Changes in Matter
Add the new notes to your table of contents, and then turn to the next clean page and set up your title and date Unit 2: Changes in Matter

3 Tape the Data and Observations Table flat into your notebook, putting a piece of tape at each corner – it should not flip up

4 Next tape the purpose, hypothesis and procedure sheet over the data and observations table so that it flips up

5 Now tape the pre-lab homework for tonight above the procedure purpose, hypothesis, and procedure paper so that it also flips up

6 On the next page, tape the analysis questions flat down at the very top of the page

7 We will complete the particle motion inquiry lab
Tonight Tomorrow Complete the pre-lab homework Begin by reading the information about thermal energy, temperature and heat Then complete the chart based on what you have read Review the particle motion inquiry lab procedures tonight to prepare for tomorrow’s class We will complete the particle motion inquiry lab Your notebook must be in class to complete this lab!

thermal energy, temperature, heat chart While your homework is being checked, please tape the CER poster into your INB Belongs on the same page as your CER notes

12 Jobs for Lab Each group will need to select a…
1. timer – this group member will be responsible for using the stop watch to keep track of time, and telling the group when to read the temperature 2. thermometer readers (2 – one for hot and one for cold) – one for each beaker, these group members are responsible for reading the temperature when the timer prompts them 3. food color dropper – this person is responsible for adding 3 drops of food coloring to the beakers at the same time 4. recorder/observer (2 – 1 for hot and one for cold) – these group members are responsible for observing and recording the lab data in real time, anyone who is not a timer, or a thermometer reader is automatically a recorder (food color droppers will become recorders once the food coloring has been added)

18 Analysis: 1. What was the purpose of completing this activity?

19 2. What causes the color to disperse?

20 3. Do hot water molecule have higher or lower kinetic energy than cold water molecules? EXPLAIN.

21 4. At the end of the day explain why temperature is the same in both beakers if one started colder and the other started warmer than room temperature. (Explain how heat transfers in both the warm and cold water beaker.)

22 5. Describe the motion of the particles in each beaker at the start of the class.

23 CER Writing Question: How are temperature and particle motion related? Claim- If temperature increases, then particle motion will ______________. Evidence- At the start of the lab the hot water was ___ degrees, and the cold water was ___ degrees. When the food coloring was added, I observed that the hot water ___________________________________________________________________, and the cold water __________________________________________________________________________. By the end of class, the hot water _____________________________________________________, and the cold water _________________________________________________________________. Reasoning- The observations made in the lab show that the food coloring dispersed more quickly through the ________ water, and more slowly through the __________ water, therefore, if temperature increases, then particle motion will ______________.
