3. Rating Scale for ECERS-3
Inadequate Minimal Good Excellent
Good, level 5 is required to meet KDE P2R; An overall rating average of 5 is expected.

Score each item based upon what is observed
**Interviews of staff are no longer required Scores are based on the observation.
Use the space provided on your score sheet to write down notes to support your rating

5. Steps to Scoring
Read each indicator for the item, beginning at the left (the 1’s column)
Circle Yes or No for each Indicator
The indicators in the 1’s column must be scored No to move on to the 3’s column
Even when there is an item marked “yes” in the indicators, score the rest of the items so that a full picture of the classroom may be seen.

If an indicator in the 1’s column is scored yes, the rating for this item is scored a 1

7. Scoring
If all the indicators in the 1’s column are scored NO and at least ½ of the indicators in the 3’s column are scored YES, then the rating for this item is a 2

8. Scoring
If all the indicators in the 3’s column are scored YES, then the rating for this item is a 3

9. Scoring
If all the indicators in the 3’s column are scored YES and at least ½ the indicators in the 5’s column are scored YES, then the rating for the item is scored a 4

10. Scoring
If all the indicators in the 5’s column are scored YES, then the rating for this item is a 5.

11. Scoring
If all the indicators in the 5’s column are scored YES and at least ½ the indicators in the 7’s column are scored YES, then the rating for this item is a 6

12. Scoring
If all the indicators in the 7’s column are scored YES, then the rating for this item is a 7

Once items are scored, calculate the rating for each subscale
For each subscale:
Add together the rating for each item in that subscale and divide by the number of items.
** Note that if there is an NA in the subscale you only divide by the number of items with a score.
Example: Subscale for Interaction:

5. Calculate the rating for the ECERS-3,
using the subscale scores
For the Scale:
Add together the rating for each subscale and divide by number of subscales (6). This will provide you with an overall rating of the ECERS-3

15. A Rule of Thumb:
If less than ½ the indicators in a column are scored YES, the score is that of the previous column

16. A Rule of Thumb:
If at least ½, but not all of the indicators in a column are scored YES, the score is the next lowest number (2, 4, or 6).

All the 3’s are scored yes, but because less than ½ of the 5’s are scored yes this brings the score to a 3.
