2017 – Child Focused Projects in Uganda – Harriet’s Story
Focus is Harriett 13 years old Harriet – She travels four hours by foot to get to school She attends the Primary School that is next to St Lukes Contracted malaria and typhoid as a child and while she is very unwell – travelled two hours by motor cycle to reach St lukes Health Clinic Harriet is grateful that she was able to access health care at St Lukes Health Centre. Harriet is dedicated to learning so that she can become a nurse St Luke’s Health Centre, located in Bujuni, Uganda Sister Mary Goretti and Harriet

Our focus project for this year is St Luke’s Health Centre, in the parish of Bujuni in the diocese of Hoima, three hours west of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. St Luke’s is a health centre for everybody, offering tests, administering immunisations and treating ailments such as respiratory tract infections, malaria, hypertension, diabetes and epilepsy. Sister Mary Goretti belongs to a local Ugandan order called the Daughters of Mary, and has been Head of Operations at St Luke’s Bujuni Health Centre for past two years. The health centre is open 24 hours and provides medical services to the 15,000 strong population. The needs of the health centre, as identified by Sr Goretti and the local people are: New ambulance for those with urgent medical conditions, including women who are in labour (most patients travel by motorbike, with some patients travelling up to three hours to receive medical care) Access to running water in the labour ward A new ultrasound machine New outpatient department and pharmacy New children’s ward New toilet block Repair damaged roof Additional beds in the labour ward
