Finding Light in Community
April 10, 2016

Colossians 1:25-27 25I have become its servant by the commission God gave me to present to you the word of God in its fullness— 26the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people…the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

1 Peter 1:13-16 “So think clearly and exercise self- control…you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”

Richard Foster “Holiness means the ability to do what needs to be done when it needs to be done. It means being ‘response-able’, able to respond appropriately to the demands of life. The word ‘virtue’ comes into our New Testament from a long history in Greek philosophical tradition, and it means simply to function well. Virtue is good habits we can rely upon to make our life work. Conversely, vice is bad habits we can rely upon to make our life not work, to make it dysfunctional, as we say. So a holy life simply is a life that works.”

“The goal towards which (God) is beginning to guide you is absolute perfection; and no power in the whole universe, except yourself, can prevent Him from taking you to that goal.” C.S. Lewis

Dietrich Bonhoeffer “It may be that Christians, in spite of corporate worship, common prayer, and all their fellowship in service, may still be left to their loneliness. The final break-through to fellowship does not occur, because, though they have fellowship with one another as believer’s and as devout people, they do not have fellowship as the undevout, as sinners.” (as who they really are and where they are really at)

Dr. Henry Cloud “We can certainly connect to God ‘vertically’ through prayer, but to feel his grace completely we have to open our hearts to the full expression of it ‘horizontally’ through other people.”

Dr. Henry Cloud “Children by nature are relationally oriented. When they are in trouble or pain, the first thing they do is reach out for a protective, comforting parent. They don’t say to themselves, ‘I’ll be strong and ride this one out, or I’ll just think positive thoughts’. They ask for help from someone outside themselves.”
