BBC Oxford – The future of News

Objectives we share with BBC Network News
Prepare for the new creative challenges ahead Ensure our strongest content is shared across our platforms Simplify and speed up decision making about deployments Better manage demand on Newsgathering/planning Work as efficiently as possible within and across platforms including news ways of working which will only emerge over time To allow staff to build a broad skills base which is reflected elsewhere in the industry. Harness the potential of new technology. Source…BBC Network News newsroom working document

The Oxford proposal. Create one daily news department where Radio, Online and TV work more closely together. The overall aim is to eliminate duplication, make better use of reporting talent and develop staff so they can focus on more creative output. In the face of future funding restrictions we need to become more efficient at producing and managing the news process. Create two new multi-media editor roles which is shared in turn by our TV Editor, Radio News Editor. The multi-media editors will be responsible for all of the journalism out of the newsroom - from commissioning to output. These editors will sit together in the centre of a newly laid out newsroom liaising closely on newsgathering, planning and commissioning so that we maximise the multi-platform impact of our daily content.

To help the whole process we need to introduce a number of joint editorial and planning meetings, with radio programmes and online features also represented. We need to consider how best to organise News output at the weekend, with an aim to have perhaps three people on duty, a Radio bulletin reader and two VJ’s who will provide for News Online and BBC 1 as well as fresh weekend content for radio bulletins. As funding comes on stream we will develop our media on demand output. To do this we will have to stop working as though our 6.30 TV programme or radio breakfast are the key output deadlines.

Also need to consider….. Skills training for senior Editors Skills training for production and reporting staff – we aim to broaden the skills base, but not overwork staff. We need to protect and develop key skills to help maintain the standard of what we do. Over time each member of staff should be able to work flexibly across two key skills (some may even work with three) How will the rota work? Production flows – E.g. what happens to the content when it gets back in the building? Any other unforeseen issues - e.g. could we end up covering fewer stories? could pool reporter working help or hinder? We will have many lessons to learn before it all goes smoothly. Rollout time table and communications
