1 Instructional Media Services (IMS)
Program Review Presentation April 18th, 2012

2 Program Description Instructional Media Services (IMS) is a Service Area that provides audio, video and graphic artist support services for faculty, and staff, with a primary focus on instruction. Our Mission: IMS is committed to support and improve the learning and teaching process at American River College through the effective use of presentation technologies. Classroom support: While IMS does not work directly with students in the classroom, it does support the learning experience by ensuring that the tools utilized by instructors to present the curriculum are functioning properly. Events: IMS ensures that events are successful with properly functioning sound, video, and promotional materials. Graphics: Our graphics department ensures that messages to students and the community are professionally presented. Brief Description of your program. Who are you? One Slide, 2 minutes

3 Program Description IMS keeps an inventory of equipment used in classrooms as well as spare parts to maintain this equipment. IMS installs equipment such as speakers, projectors, LCDs and controllers. IMS loans a limited number of laptops and projectors out to classrooms. IMS sets up for events such as: convocation, graduation, college hour, Autum Gold, Board Room meetings, Multi-Cultural week, fashion shows, etc… IMS is instrumental in producing the Catalog, Enrollment basics and the Registration Guide IMS handles other graphical project requests each year from laminating to creating signs, posters, flyers, logos, brochures, tickets, the Kaneko Calendar, etc… This year IMS completed 493 graphic requests, repaired 40 pieces of equipment, checked out carts 179 times, set up for 212 events.

4 Benchmarks How do we know IMS is successful?
As a service provider, we receive immediate feedback from faculty and staff on their audio/video or graphic experience. We ask questions and understand that service is a continuous process that requires a constant effort to improve. We receive positive reviews. The equipment is functioning properly and the product looks or sounds precise.

5 Program -- Challenges Current challenges:
1. The budget requirements have grown while the budget has been cut. IMS strives to stay within their budget while replacing and repairing hardware or utilizing materials to create signs, posters or any other graphical presentations but the needs of the campus have been growing. For the last 2 years we have exceeded our allocation. Fortunately, we had some carry over funds to borrow from but this does not allow for equipment piloting. 2. Access to classrooms is limited. With the increase in the number of projectors in classrooms and the need for service in small windows of time, networking these projectors is becoming imperative. This enhancement will allow for more proactive service prior to outages. 3. IMS has only 1 full time classified and a part-time temporary graphics designer, requiring us to be selective on our projects. 4. Communication with faculty can be difficult, but IMS created a web page to ensure that communications are correct.

6 Planning Implications
For IMS, technology is primarily a tool to improve communications to ARC students. Faculty have expressed a desire for smart classrooms. IMS is working to increase our knowledge of smart classroom equipment as well as requesting funding to network our classroom projectors. This network is a basic start to provide more proactive services IMS worked on a standards list for backend electronics for the Technology Committee as well as worked on Committee to decide on a minimum standard for a smart classroom. We have begun learning about wireless and interactive projectors as well as how mobile devices will interact in the classroom. These new technologies will enhance the way information is presented but will also bring with it a need for more technical expertise in the classroom. Funding for a basic network of equipment is essential to achieve our goals
