2 Napoleon’s Empire A. Napoleon had began to build an empire in Europe, but had been unable to conquer Britain.

3 B. Napoleon tried to create a Grand Empire consisting of three parts.
1st part – French Empire 2nd part – Dependent states: Napoleon’s relatives ruled (controlled by Napoleon) 3rd part –Continental System: Allies of France

C. France’s oppression in the dependent countries allowed for nationalism to grow in those countries. Nationalism is the cultural identity of people based on common language, religion, and national symbols (love of one’s country).

7 D. Nationalism caused people to begin
D. Nationalism caused people to begin to think of their country and ideals as things worth fighting for … Napoleon tried to use the Continental System to defeat Britain. The Continental System was suppose to block all goods coming out of Britain. Russia resented being told that they could not buy British goods. Czar Alexander I began trading with Britain.

9 The Fall of Napoleon A. In 1812 France’s Army of over 400,000 entered Russia. Napoleon needed to score a quick victory. The Russians would not fight. As the Russians retreated they practiced a scorched-earth policy, burning houses and crops.

but finds the city burning. With no housing and winter coming, Napoleon and his troops head home.

13 B. Other European nations rose up to attack the crippled French army.
Paris, France was captured in and Napoleon was exiled to the island of Elba. Louis XVI’s brother assumed the thrown as Louis XVIII, restoring the monarchy of France.

15 C. The king had little support. Napoleon escapes Elba.
Napoleon entered Paris in triumph on March 20, 1815. The French troops were pleased to see their former emperor. Within days, Napoleon was again the emperor of France.

17 D. Great Britain and Napoleon would fight again.
At Waterloo, Belgium in June 1815, Napoleon was defeated by a combined British and Prussian army headed by the Duke of Wellington. The European powers exiled Napoleon to St. Helena Island, Napoleon’s power ended.

SECTION 4 The Napoléonic Era Exiled to St. Helena for 6 years In 1821 Napoleon died there and was buried on the island.

19 SECTION 4 The Napoléonic Era His remains were returned to France in 1840 where he rests today.
