HB 5 Impact on Graduation Plans

2 Purpose To identify the graduation plan options available to students who enter high school beginning with the school year and outline the process for helping each SBISD student select the best graduation plan for them

4 HB 5 - Major Components Testing Accountability Graduation Plans

5 Testing – End of Course Exams
Number of exams reduced from 15 to 5: Algebra I English I and II U.S. History Biology

6 Testing Remediation and Class Removal Accelerated Instruction
Board Policy Cannot miss more than 10% of class days without parent consent Accelerated Instruction Must be provided for any student that fails a state exam. May require participation outside of normal school hours and year.

8 Options under HB 5 High school students have the opportunity to graduate on: Foundation Plan with Endorsements 26 Credits Foundation Plan 22 Credits Students who graduate on the Foundation Plan are eligible to be accepted to a 4-year university in Texas

9 Students Entering 9th Grade 2014 – 15
Each student selects (in writing) an endorsement The student and their parents are advised of the benefits of graduating on the Foundation Plan with Endorsements Endorsements can be changed at any time

10 Students Entering 9th Grade 2014 – 15
May move to the Foundation Plan without Endorsements after their 10th Grade year Parent/Guardian must give written permission to move to the Foundation Plan

11 Foundation Plan Requirements – 22 Credits
ELA – 4 credits Math – 3 credits Algebra II not required Social Studies – 3 credits Science – 3 credits Foreign Language – 2 credits Fine Arts – 1 credit Physical Education – 1 credit 5 Elective Credits

12 Endorsements STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Business and Industry Public Services Arts and Humanities Multidisciplinary Studies

13 Foundation Plan with Endorsements
26 Credits Foundation Plan plus the following: 4th Math Course 4th Science Course Endorsement Area Coursework

14 Distinguished Level of Achievement
Top 10% A student must complete: Foundation Plan At least 1 Endorsement 4 credits in Mathematics (including Algebra II) 4 credits in Science

15 Students Entering 9th Grade before 2014-15
May move to the Foundation Plan Parent/Guardian must give written permission to move to the Foundation Plan
