2. In 1815 in France, a man, named Jean Valjean, was released after nineteen years in prison. He had been sentenced to a term of five years because he stole a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister and his family. But the sentence was later increased because of his attempts to escape. During his imprisonment, he astounded others by his exhibitions of unusual physical strength.

Being freed at last, Valjean trekked a long distance on foot. Innkeepers refused him food and lodging, and even beggars despised him because the yellow passport that reveals the identity of him being a former convict.

4. Fortunately, a bishop, who was a saintly man, came to his aid while he had barely had will in surviving. The bishop treated him graciously, fed him, and gave him a bed. Had the man not found him, starved and shivered in the frigid night, he might die eventually.

5. During the night, so selfish was Jean that the greediness urged him to steal the bishop’s silverware and fled. But he was immediately apprehended by the authority. With no censure, the priest insisted the silverware not being stolen, but also added a pair of candlesticks as the gift. Astonished, though, the gendarmes then released the prisoner. Alone with the bishop, Valjean was confounded by the churchman’s attitude, for the bishop asked only that he made the silver as a metaphor of living an honest life. The tolerant action of the kind- hearted man, had guided an entirely different life of Jean Valjean.

Valjean couldn’t thank the priest enough. With a heart of appreciation and the eagerness to fulfill his promise, Valjean masked his identity of prisoner and entered a town in disguise. Under the assumed name of Madeleine, Valjean ran an ingenious manufacturing process that brought the town prosperity. Being the boss of the factory, he had a nice reputation. Furthermore, he was popular because of his warm-hearted and considerate characteristic; eventually he became the town’s mayor and had not only him but the residents to live a better life.
