Use the ethical decision making process
What Should Sharon Do? Use the ethical decision making process Step 1 Identify the Ethical Dilemma Should Sharon speak up to the Doctor about her new method of practice, which is over treating the patient or should she just go along with what the Doctor is doing and not tell her the issues she has about her new method?
4
Step2 List all information pertinent to the issue. If legal questions exist, consult an appropriate source for answers Sharon doesn’t know if the doctor is really over treating the patients for financial gain or if she really thinks she is doing the right thing, so Sharon needs to find out if the doctor is really over treating patients because she needs money or because she really thinks she is doing the right thing. Legal problems in regards to this issue- By over treating the patients and charging them for services they don’t need just to make extra money the doctor is breaking the law.
5
Step 3 State the possible action options that exist 1.Sharon could talk to the Doctor about the issue. 2.Sharon could just go along with whatever the doctor is doing. 3.Sharon could report the issue to the Dental board without talking to the Doctor.
6
Apply Ethical Principles to each of the options identified
Step 4 Apply Ethical Principles to each of the options identified 1. If Sharon talked to the Doctor the ethical principles involved would be enforcing beneficence, societal trust, and nonmaleficence. 2.If Sharon did not report the issue and just went along with what the Doctor was doing she would be going against the ethical principles of beneficence, societal trust, and nonmaleficence by allowing the doctor to continue over treating the patients for her financial gain. 3. If Sharon reported the doctor to the board without talking to the doctor first, she would break the trust between the doctor and herself and it would not be managing the dilemma constructively.
7
Step 5 State your decision Sharon should confront the doctor about the dilemma first. If the doctor doesn’t change her ways Sharon should go to the Dental Board and report her. Step 6 Implement the decision
