1
Do Now: If Derek Jeter was able to travel 5 kilometers North in 1 hour in his car. What was his average velocity? Describe the motion being represented in the graphs. Is the object speeding up, slowing down, not moving, etc…
2
Aim: How do we describe acceleration?
HW: Acceleration WS
3
How was the car able to time travel?
Which graph represents the motion of the car before it vanished? Why? Start at 1:51 on Clip
4
Acceleration Time Line
Which graph represents the Car? What do the other time lines represent? Time in Seconds A B C
5
How do we graph acceleration?
This is when an object picks up speed (speeds up) Which graph shows an object accelerating? How do you know?
6
How can we describe deceleration?
This is when an object slows down. Which of the graphs below show an object decelerating? What’s the acceleration for it?
7
Describe what Car B doing
Car B is going at a constant speed (not accelerating or decelerating).
8
Which car is going the fastest? Explain.
How far did each car travel in 5 seconds?
9
Summary Activity – Speed Graph
Use the graph at your station to answer the questions below. Be sure to provide an explanation for your answer.
10
What is going on with car A and B during seconds 5-8?
What is the acceleration of car A? How far did Car B travel from 8-10 seconds?
12
Summary What does the slope of a velocity vs. time graph tell us?
How do we solve for the distance an object travels in a velocity time graph? What is the slope of a position vs. time graph?
13
Do Now: What is the objects acceleration from 0-2 s?
What distance did the object travel from 0-10 s?
14
How do we determine an objects acceleration?
Based on the slope from the graph… What is the formula for acceleration? OR
15
G.U.E.S.S Method G-Given U-Unknown E-Equation S-Substitutions S-Solve
16
Example A car is initially traveling at 10 m/s accelerates at 3 m/s2 for 20 seconds. Calculate the final velocity.
17
Station Activity Go to the station assigned and attempt the following kinematics problems.
18
Station 1 A young girl named Monica rides her bicycle East while slowing down. Her bike must be accelerating in what direction? Kyle frolics across the football field with his speed increasing from 3.5 m/s to 7 m/s. What is his average acceleration over this period of 3 seconds?
19
Station 2 Mr. Rao’s dog is chasing deer and runs 15 meters away in 5 seconds. He then runs back 10 meters and sniffs a tree in 8 seconds. What distance did the dog run? What is the dogs speed? What was the dogs displacement? What was the dog’s velocity?
20
Summary What does it mean for an object to have a negative acceleration? How do we calculate the distance an object travels from a velocity time graph? A car drives into a curve with a constant speed. How does the curve affect the car’s speed and velocity? WHY??? 1. Slowing down or accelerating in the opposite direction. 2. Take the area under a curve. 3. Car changes velocity, but not speed because the direction is constantly changing.
