2 Context Segregation ran rampant through the United States and Separate but Equal was at its height of power. Many people in America believed the Great War was strictly a European problem and this included African Americans. The Great Migration was a catalyst for Southern African Americans to join the war and escape their social, economic, and political depression. Blacks saw the war as an opportunity to gain respect from their white counterparts and gain equal treatment.
