The importance of being alert to potential hazards when dealing with machinery, equipment and substances such as toner fluid

Safety within a office Safety within the office is very important, for example, having wires tucked away, chairs tucked under the desk, having equipment and machinery safely installed, no drinks by the computers ect. This is because it will make it easier to move around the office such as collecting work from the printer, without having to move or trip over obstacles on the way. Having awareness of potential hazards such as printer toner is also crucial. Knowing how to change substances is important because if done inappropriately, it can cause potential damage to yourself and others around you. Companies usually introduce training, the necessary tools and protective equipment to employees who work with hazardous equipment. They will be shown how to change equipment safely such as toner fluids without causing harm. It is the employee’s responsibility to follow the safety rules and use protective equipment to work safely.

Hazards Showing that there is a hazard is work is very important such as a wet floor sign. If an employee breaches this sign, serious damaged can be caused. It is everyone’s responsibility within a company to ensure Health and Safety is followed and accidents do not occur. If a health and safety issue does occur, it should be reported to a manager. A near miss is an incident that did not result in injury, illness, or damage but had the potential to do so. Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) is an act that gives companies and organisations the responsibility of their employees to make sure that the work equipment is used safely. PUWER requires that equipment provided for use at work is: Suitable for the intended use Safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and inspected to ensure it is correctly installed used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training Accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls. These will normally include emergency stop devices, adequate means of isolation from sources of energy, clearly visible markings and warning devices Used in accordance with specific requirements, for mobile work equipment and power presses If there is a hazardous substance, it should be stored somewhere safe and secure. It must always be labelled to protect others safety.

Reporting Health and Safety issues
A health and safety issue should be reported to a manager and a health and safety officer within a company. This is because they will be able to create a solution to prevent this being a risk again. If an employee has a near miss event, they will have to fill in a form which will have to be filled in within 10 days. A near miss event form and a disease form must be sent to: Health & Safety Executive, Priestley House, Priestley Road, Basingstoke. RG24 9NW Tel: Or report by telephone or to HSE on-line.

Reading Instructions Reading manuals and instructions that comes with the equipment is vital. If this is not carried out, the equipment can be used inappropriately and potentially harm an employee. Keeping the equipment clean doesn’t just make it look presentable but it can make it more efficient and stop it from clogging up and breaking. If appropriate clothing, equipment and tools are not present to an employee, then it is unsafe to operate a piece of machinery. Having hair long hair tied back is an example of safe use with machinery
