2. The Dunbar – Holland Scholarship
The Jefferson Middle School PTA administers a $1,000 annual scholarship for a graduating high school senior residing in Arlington County who was promoted to high school from Thomas Jefferson Middle School (TJMS). This scholarship is intended to recognize a college-bound TJMS graduate for exemplary service to the Arlington community. The scholarship is named for two beloved TJMS faculty members who each died suddenly and unexpectedly. Both of these faculty members were devoted servants of the youth of Arlington for many years.

3. Dot Dunbar
Dorothy (Dot) Dunbar taught and coached at Gallaudet University from before joining Arlington Public Schools, where she taught for 21 years. During this time, Ms. Dunbar taught Health and Physical Education and served as Arlington’s Aquatic Center Manager and Program Coordinator. In September 1993, Ms. Dunbar joined the Jefferson Middle School staff. She was a popular and valued member of the Jefferson community.

4. Tom Holland
Thomas (Tom) Holland was born and raised in Arlington County. He was a graduate of Stratford Middle School and Washington-Lee High School. After college Mr. Holland taught history and math in the New York City public school system and he even performed in an off-Broadway play during his time in New York. He ultimately served as a Resource Assistant back home in Arlington County at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Tom Holland ran the score board at every home basketball game and wrestling meet and kept score at every home track meet. He also sponsored the chess club, student council and stage crew.

5. Gretel Truong: Film Campaign Manager, The Malala Fund
Gretel Truong has worked in the media, film and non-profit world for over a decade, with a core theme of bringing to life stories of people around world to drive actions for change. She currently is the Film Campaign Manager at the Malala Fund working on the international social action campaign around the release of HE NAMED ME MALALA #withMalala. Through her work, Gretel has collaborated with multiple world leaders and social activists and has led digital advocacy initiatives in over 50 countries.  Gretel serves on two nonprofit boards and is a graduate of Wakefield High School and the University of Virginia.

6. Dejah Lee: Student, VCU
Dejah Lee is a member of the Virginia Commonwealth University class of 2019, majoring in mechanical and nuclear engineering. Dejah studied abroad at the nuclear engineering program at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. She has been a Congressional Aide to Senator Cory Booker of NJ and an intern with the US Department of Energy offices of Unclear Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration. Dejah was an appointed National Delegate from the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital. She is a graduate of Washington-Lee High School.

7. Alexandra “Sasha” Prokhorova: Product Designer, Whistle Labs
Sasha Prokhorova is a User Experience (UX) and Product Designer in the San Fransisco Bay area. She is a volunteer mentor to immigrants. In college she studied abroad in both France and China. Sasha is a graduate of Wakefield High School and Dartmouth College.

8. Lana Mahgoub: Ph.D. Candidate, University of Wisconsin, Madison
Lana Mahgoub is in her fourth year as a doctoral candidate in school psychology. Her primary research interests involve children’s language cognition, student academic achievement, and multicultural issues in mental health service delivery and education. She has a strong interest in furthering research on bilingualism, how children process languages, and how to resolve multicultural issues in education, particularly in regard to ELLs in schools. Her projects aim to shed light on ways to enhance the linguistic and academic development of bilingual children. Lana is a graduate of Washington-Lee High School, where she earned an IB diploma.

9. Victor Gomez: Student, Yale University
Victor Gomez is a member of the Yale University class of 2017, majoring in economics. Victor is an admissions office student ambassador and captain of the Yale Kickboxing Team. While at Yale he was awarded the Alexander Capelluto Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to only one Yale student, to fund attendance at a leadership conference. This past summer Victor was a Treasury Services intern at J.P. Morgan Chase in New York City. He is a graduate of Wakefield High School.
