Snapshot Definition What is a snapshot (data)?
Data Snapshot shows state of data at a particular point in time. “Freeze” the data. “Copy” of the data.
9
Snapshot Example New Members by month Exclude Full Refunds
Include Partial Refunds Include cancellations On 1st of November 2014 October 2014 – 27 new members On 5th of November 2014 October 2014 – 26 new members On 1st of December 2014 October 2014 – 25 new members
10
Solution? Snapshot the data (make a copy at a point in time)
If we snapshot data on 1st of November 2014 than we can refer to a snapshot of data as of 1st of Nov.
11
Why snapshots are useful?
We can see what the data was like a certain point in time even if: The data changed. Business rules changed. Structure of data changed. We can compare periods of the same data using either multiple snapshots or a snapshot and live data. (Data Validation). We can schedule snapshots at important points in time (risks are the snapshot may fail) Snapshots have the same data and are not affected by updates. Useful then multiple people work on the data and need the same result.
12
SSRS Snapshots SSRS Snapshots “freeze” data & layout at a given point in time and store in “Report Server” database. Dual Purpose: “Freeze” data at a certain point in time. Control Report Processing Scheduled snapshots Improved performance
13
SSRS Snapshots Limitations
They “freeze” data and worke best with “previous period” (e.g. last month) and not month on month data. All or nothing “freeze”. We are not able to “combine” snapshots. Easy to implement however long term the cost and risks may lead to a data warehouse solution. They are not a replacement for a data warehouse with Slowly Changing Dimensions and Fact Tables Snapshots. Lower Data Security

Do It Yourself (DIY) Tasks:
Find a good example where snapshots make sense. Try out different options SSRS snapshots. Manual Snapshots. Scheduled Snapshots. See how they work with parameters.
