Statistical Measures M M O D E E A D N I A R A N G E
2
Mean The mean is the same as average. To find the mean:
First, add up all of the numbers in the set of data. Then, count the number of addends. Last, divide that sum by the number of addends. Example
3
Example of Mean ÷ = 25 5 5 ? Set of data: 4,6,5,7,3
Step 1: Add up all the numbers in the set of data. What do you get? Step 2 Count the number of addends. Step 3 divide the sum by the number of addends. 25 5 5 ÷ = ?
4
Example of Mean ÷ = Set of data:
Step 1: Add up all the numbers in the set of data. What do you get? Step 2 Count the number of addends. Step 3 divide the sum by the number of addends. ÷ =
5
Mode The mode is the number that appears the most in a set of data.
To find the mode: First, look for numbers that are in the data more than once. Last, figure out which number is in the data the most. Example
6
Example of Mode 3 2 3 Set of data: 3, 15, 16, 3, 2, 2, 5, 4, 3
Step 1: Look for numbers that are listed more than once. Step 2: Which one is in the data set the most times? 3 2 3
7
Example of Mode Set of data:
Step 1: Look for numbers that are listed more than once. Step 2: Which one is in the data set the most times?
8
Median The median is the middle number in a set of data.
To find the median: Put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Find the number that is in the exact middle. Example
9
Example of Median x x x x Set of data:
Step 1: Put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Step 2: Find the number that is in the exact middle. 3 14 2 7 15 x 3 2 7 14 15 x x x
10
Example of Median Set of data:
Step 1: Put the numbers in order from least to greatest. Step 2: Find the number that is in the exact middle.
11
Range The range of a set of data is the maximum number minus the minimum number. To find the range: Find the maximum (greatest) number. Find the minimum (least) number. Subtract the minimum number from the maximum number. Example
12
Example of Range 19 3 16 Set of data: 12, 3, 4, 19, 8, 9
Step 1: Find the maximum. Step 2: Find the minimum. Step 3: Subtract the minimum from the maximum. 19 3 16
13
Example of Range Set of data: Step 1: Find the maximum.
Step 2: Find the minimum. Step 3: Subtract the minimum from the maximum.
