Warm Up 6.2.C Use a number line to list the numbers in order from least to greatest. 1. 4, –1, 6, 0, –4, 5, –3 –4, –3, –1, 0, 4, 5, 6 2. 9, –12, –5, 8, –15, 0, –2 –15, –12, –5, –2, 0, 8, 9
2
Use a number line to list the numbers in order from least to greatest.
3. –38, –16, 45, –24, 71, –63, 10 –63, –38, –24, –16, 10, 45, 71 4. Write two inequalities to compare –13 and –26. –13 > –26; –26 < –13 5. Write two inequalities to compare 0 and –8. 0 > –8; –8 < 0

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
The student is expected to: Number and operations—6.2.B Identify a number, its opposite, and its absolute value. Mathematical Processes 6.1.A Apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace.
5
What is Absolute Value? Absolute Value: a given number’s distance from zero on a number line. The absolute value of -3 is written |-3 | and this means -3 is three units from 0.
6
Why will the absolute value of a number never be negative?
Turn and Talk Why will the absolute value of a number never be negative?
7
Example 1 Draw the a number line and graph the following numbers.
Challenge: If you finish early write these integers in order from least to greatest!
8
Example 1 Continued Using the number line you just labeled, find the absolute value of each number. Remember: Absolute Value is the distance from 0 on a number line. This answer is ALWAYS nonnegative!
9
Real World Example Jake uses his online music store gift card to buy an album of songs by his favorite band. Find the negative integer that represents the change in balance on Jake’s card after his purchase. What is the absolute value of this integer?
10
Practice

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE 1 A deep-sea diver dived off a boat to a depth of –45 feet. What is the absolute value that expresses the distance the diver went? The absolute value of –45 is 45.
12
How do you find and use absolute value?
Count the distance from zero to a number on a number line. Absolute value is always nonnegative and is useful for representing distance or an amount of change.
13
1. |14| > 14 False 2. |44| = |–44| True 3. |–17| = 17 True 4.
Read each statement carefully. Write True or False. 1. |14| > 14 False 2. |44| = |–44| True 3. |–17| = 17 True 4. |–22| = –22 False 5. |–33| is the opposite of –33. True
