Fairy tales Year 7
2
What is a Fairy Tale? What do you know about fairy tales?
How many can you list?
3
Conventions of a Fairy Tale 1. Moral
The moral or lesson is a key concept in fairy tales Eg Don’t judge a book by its cover. What morals from fairy tales/fables can you think of?

2. Characters All fairy tales need a good character/hero, they don't need to be perfect but the reader must like them. They are usually naïve, innocent and believe in miracles. The bad character (witch, a goblin, a dragon or an ogre) acts as an opponent to the good character and they usually have evil powers which are used to cause the good character pain. They often abuse magic to control, imprison and destroy for their own gains Friend or supporting character can be a task-setter (this may be a king, for example) other accomplices (these may include talking animals) adverseries (such as an evil step-mother) or the character that the hero has to rescue and release from a spell.

3. Magic Many fairy tales have both good and evil magical characters that work to counteract the other's influence. Often the magical numbers three and seven are used in fairy tales. Think about it: 3 little pigs 7 dwarves 3 fairy godmothers 3 wishes 7 mermaid sisters 3 bears

4. Obstacles The basic structure of a fairy tale involves a hero or heroine performing one or more tasks and then being rewarded as a result. The obstacle usually appears to be impossible but with a bit of creativity and some magical assistance a solution can be found. The obstacle may be overcome by their 'good' qualities, such as courage, cunning or goodness, by timely intervention of an accomplice with magical powers or by using a magical object. What examples of obstacles can you think of?

5. Happily Ever After Nearly all fairy tales start with "Once upon a time" and end with "And they all lived happily ever after".

Characters, Setting and Plot
In small groups write down in a table the common types of characters, settings and plot/events you find in fairy tales. Example: Characters Settings Plot/Events Prince Woods Spell Princess Castle Curse
9
Fairy Tale Task In your group find a Fairy Tale to read through.
From your chosen Fairy Tale create a new table and list the characters, settings and plot/events that occur in your story. Create 3 freeze frames for the beginning, middle and end of your fairy tale. Bring one of these scenes to life
