How do the levels of organization show an increase in complexity?
Standard B.10C – Analyze the levels of organization in biological systems and relate the levels to each other and to the whole system Essential Question How do the levels of organization show an increase in complexity?

7
The Characteristics of Life
Cells – the smallest unit of organisms that carry on the functions life. Made of one or more cells – unicellular or multicellular
8
Displays Organization - cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
9
Growth – increase in size, adding cells and new structures Development – Natural changes that occur during growth
10
Reproduction – organisms produce new individuals
11
Responds to stimuli Stimulus – anything that an organism responds to, either internal or external environment Response – the reaction of an organism to a stimulus (critical to survival)
12
Requires energy - to fuel their life functions
Requires energy - to fuel their life functions. They get their energy from food or they use light energy to make their food
13
Maintains Homeostasis – The regulation of an organism’s internal environment to maintain life.
14
Thought question: Let’s list all the characteristics of life that fire possesses.

If Transformers were real, would they be considered alive
If Transformers were real, would they be considered alive? Why or why not?
16
If vampires were real, would they be considered living?

Levels of Organization
20
Atom- Smallest object that retains the properties of an element Ex: Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen
Atoms held together by a chemical bond makes up a Molecule
21
Molecules together will form organelles
And a group of organelles will make up a….. cell
22
Multicellular Organization
Similar cells work together to form Tissues. Lots of Muscle cells together… muscle tissue Muscle Cell
23
Multicellular Organization
Different tissues work together to form organs.
24
Multicellular Organization
Different Organs work together to form organ Systems. The heart is an organ made of cardiac muscle tissue… when the heart works with the arteries and veins it creates the circulatory system
25
Multicellular Organization
All the Organ Systems work together to form a living Organism.
26
A. Levels of Biological Organization
Organism – a living thing made up of one or more cells. Unicellular – an organism composed of one cell, can carry on all the activities necessary for life Multicellular – An organism composed of many cells, different cells carry out different jobs (division of labor),
