3. OUR APPROACH TO SAFETY
Filtering and parental locks are extremely important in reducing but they will never be enough. Even if you lock everything down, what about when they are with friends?
Children need to be taught how to use the internet safely and what to do when things go wrong. School is an ideal place to learn these boundaries.

5. ONLINE SAFETY AT TALBOT
The staff are diligent about keeping your children safe in school when they are online.
Talbot has control measures to reduce risk but our focus is on education.
We cannot guarantee your child will never see unpleasant content in school (although incidents are very low).
You will always be contacted if your child sees something that makes them feel uncomfortable or upsets them.

6. ONLINE RISKS The dangers for children are:
unpleasant material (especially images/videos)
cyber bullying
dangerous adults
What do children think the risks are?
Viruses
Rude pictures
People stealing money from them

7. UNPLEASANT CONTENT
Unpleasant material is the biggest issue on the internet in terms of frequency.
Searches for basic words can accidently produce content that is sexual, violent or disturbing (particularly images and videos).
If your children actively look for such material, the content they will find is truly shocking. YouTube for example has videos of people dying in stunts, being burnt alive and of beheadings.
Therefore, we need to teach children how to search safely and what to do if something goes wrong.

8. UNPLEASANT CONTENT Different ages – different approaches:
Rec and KS1 - do not do open searches, they are directed to specific websites
KS2 – are taught to navigate the web but supervised
Videos – pupils are not permitted to search videos in school
Making online searches safer:
Make good choices to protect yourself - Zip it, Block it, Flag it
Parental locks
Filters in place
Make subject specific searches
Don't scroll down when doing image searches
Do not click through on shocking images

9. CYBER BULLYING
Although this is rarer, it is on the increase nationally (especially in secondary schools).
Unfortunately, there is a disconnect for some children when they go online. They do not act in the same way as they would in the real world. Ask them “Would you do/say that in front of your class or in the street to complete strangers?
Many victims feel it is a particularly harmful form of bullying because there is no respite from it at home.
and social media - once you put something online, you can’t control it
Forwarding and messaging - the speed at which things are spread is different
Friends – what is a friend (most children on Facebook have literally hundreds of friends)

Use DB Primary, closed social network and effective monitoring

We are going to show the following video to KS2 pupils and discuss it with them (at an age appropriate level).

12. ONLINE SAFETY WEEK Whole school assemblies PSHE lessons in class
Specific ICT lessons on searching the internet
Online safety poster competition
Parent/Carer information booklets

13. BASIC TIPS Set basic filters Set PINS and Passwords on all devices
Keep the computer in a family room where you can see it
Get to know your child’s online habits.
Don’t let them talk/message strangers – set up a white list
Stay alert to any sudden changes in mood, e.g. increased secretiveness.
Keep talking to your child. Let them know it is never to late to tell you about something that makes them feel uncomfortable.
Spend some time surfing the internet yourself.
Install commercial monitoring software on your computer (showing a Child Safety Online Kitemark)
