Staff briefing 3 Engaging with research What are preflight checklists? Before students hand in a piece of work, get them into a routine of having their ‘feedback buddy’ complete a preflight checklist. This checklist should work as the success criteria for the piece of work. Students are working to improve each other and take responsibility for ensuring their work is ready for submission. If there are features of the work that aren’t good enough or aren’t evidenced at all, then there is still time to add to the work before submission.

4 Why should you trial this strategy?
Staff briefing 3 Why should you trial this strategy? Preflight checklists would be a good strategy to trial with a class or group of students where you feel that students often rush their work and are more interested in completing it quickly rather than producing something of quality. It is also a good strategy to make the success criteria explicit to students so there is clarity in your expectations. Teacher clarity, which clear success criteria and guided practice are examples of, has an effect size of 0.8, according to John Hattie. Remember anything higher than 0.4 is generating significant impact on student achievement.
