8 Internal Architecture
Classical, Scalable Architecture Single web server services hundreds of clients Applications are template driven and rule based. New applications added as needed Resources added as required. (Databases, Historians, Interfaces etc.) Rich set of Industrial Components In the diagram above, the actual Applications are shown above the j5 Framework Object and the Internal Modules and Connectors are shown below the Framework Object. The j5 Web Server connects to these different modules via the j5 Framework and delivers the pure zero client window to any of the end user consoles. Applications: There are nearly 50 different applications from Shutdown Logs, to Work Order Management, to Incident Management, Knowledge Bases, Inspection Rounds and Mobile Solutions etc. Any of these applications can be added to the Framework and indeed new applications are being created continuously. Generally, we divide applications into Operations Applications (Like General Logbooks, Handover Logs, Work Order Management Systems etc. Real Time Applications (Like Alarm Managers, Historians, Downtime Managers etc. Management Apps (Like HR Applications, Quality Applications, Cost Control Managers etc. and Specialized Apps (That perform a specific function, like Oil Movements, Pipeline Management etc. j5 Internal Modules: These are specialized Support Modules that provide the critical and specific functionality to the Applications. For example, the Work Flow Manager provides a powerful, configurable work flow capability to each of the Applications. The Shift Manger provides the base functionality for any of the Applications that require shift capabilities. Connectors: The Connectors provide the link to the outside world. For example, since the j5 system supports many different databases, the Database Connector is responsible for managing the flow of information between the database and any of the Internal Modules or the Applications themselves. 12 Summary E Logbooks have advanced substantially in Features and Sophistication Although E Logbooks were the pioneers, they actually form a small subset of applications that are required on the site I.e. There is a requirement for an Operations Centric MES System with Multiple Applications Modern MES systems are available that can handle multiple sites and hundreds or thousands of users. These systems also have increased connectivity features..for example to Document Management Systems, LIMS, Maintenance Systems, HSE etc. The j5 OMS supports nearly 50 different applications from Shutdown Logs, to Work Order Management, to Incident Management, Knowledge Bases, Inspection Rounds and Mobile (IntelaTrac) solutions etc. Any of these applications can be added to the Framework and indeed new applications are being created continuously. A Single Server providing MES services to multiple sites

15 Advantages Cost: We don’t use up our resources re-inventing the wheel
Functionality: We receive a VERY powerful application that has been developed over many years and hundreds of sites Reliability: We can ensure a higher availability because we can devote more resources Data: We have a huge repository of data at our disposal Dashboard: We can start easily making sense out of this data The j5 OMS supports nearly 50 different applications from Shutdown Logs, to Work Order Management, to Incident Management, Knowledge Bases, Inspection Rounds and Mobile (IntelaTrac) solutions etc. Any of these applications can be added to the Framework and indeed new applications are being created continuously. 16 Objections? We actually don’t want to share our data
We want to develop our own applications We don’t want our data to leave the site We don’t trust anyone else with our requirements Its too complicated? 20 Summary and Conclusions
The E Logbook has matured into a complex and sophisticated tool The E Logbook is just one of many similar tools that are being used for operations. We call these kind of tools MES applications Many large companies are centralizing their applications across multiple sites There are huge benefits to be gained from this kind of rationalization. Because of their unique attitude (of co-operation) accelerator sites may be one of the few industries that can take advantage of this pooling across different companies.
