Transferrring Energy Unit 3 – Topic 6
2
3 Ways Heat Can Travel Listen... Radiation Conduction Convection
3
POPCORN! 3 ways to make it Oil, pan, stove Hot air popper Microwave
What does that have to do with Radiation Conduction Convection
4
Conduction Heating metal – what happens? Particles vibrate, making adjacent particles vibrate….and so on and so on. As the vibrations are passed along so is the heat.
5
Conduction Why does metal feel colder than wood if they are both the same temperature? Metal = conductor; wood = insulator Metal conducts heat away from hands Wood is a HEAT INSULATOR – less efficient at transferring energy
6
Convection Heat transfer by fluids Convection Current
Moving fluid that carries heat with it Warm air expands & rises Cools off, contracts, falls
7
Convection Applications
Weather systems The current is the breeze Part of hurricane formation Heating homes Hot upstairs; cooler downstairs
8
Radiation Transfer of energy without any movement
Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) Travels in waves Absorbed and reflected by objects Travel at approx. speed of light
9
POPCORN! Your challenge – explain which
energy transfer process is used for each method of cooking popcorn. THEN explain why! Oil, pan, stove Hot air popper Microwave
