The Potential Application and Implications of Liveability Principles Case study: Namibian University of Science and Technology campus Research Proposal Prepared by: Tresia Amwaalwa Student No:

2 Overview Introduction Background Aim Objectives Literature Review
Significance of the Research Methodology Sampling Strategy Data Analysis References

3 Introduction and background
Generally people want to live, work and play in a single neighbourhood, people want an area that encourages walking, offers different types of housing , shops, and amenities (Baker & Biton, 2015). Spaces that offer: Good quality of life A good balance of social, economic and environmental needs

4 Introduction and Background
What NUST has to offer Few recreational or relaxation spaces Mostly build up, few pockets of hard open spaces Mostly motorised traffic Non walk-able streets Predominantly flats and hostel accommodation No integration or connection between campus. This is a problem!

5 CREATING A LIVEABLE CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Aim of the research is to study the different principles of liveability that can be applied to the NUST campus

6 Objectives To identify the principles of liveability;
To critically analyse the current liveability status of NUST; To assess the liveability aspects of the most liveable campus towns; To compare the liveable aspects of the campus town with that of NUST; To apply the liveability principles on the proposed NUST campus; To investigate the impacts of the location of the NUST campus on the surrounding neighbourhood; and To examine the current policies that governs University Campus Developments

7 Literature Review Defining Liveability
Timmer and Seymoar (2006)- liveability as the organization of an urban area in a way that it is healthy for its inhabitants both for their physical social and mental health. Kennedy & Buys, (n.d)- as the wellbeing of a community and a sustainable area. Giap, Thye & Aw (2014)- liveability include “elements of a home, neighbourhood, and metropolitan area that contribute to safety, economic opportunities and welfare, health, convenience, mobility, and recreation”.

8 Liveability Principles
Design on a human scale; Provide choices; Encourage mixed-use development; Preserve urban centres; Vary transportation options; Build vibrant public spaces; Create a neighbourhood identity; Protect environmental resources; Conserve landscapes; and Other related design matters. (Integration, Innovation) Source: American Institute of Architects, Jantawan, Nara, Tsai, (2014)

9 Significance of the Research
Provide vital information that can contribute and direct the future development of a liveable Namibian University of Science and Technology Campus.

10 Research Design and Methods
The study is exploratory Mix methods Sampling strategy Strategy: Probability sampling method Technique: Stratified Random Sampling
