USES EXAMPLES Repeated Actions in the Past When I was a child. My family would travel in the West every summer. We used to visit the Teton Mountains every year. Continuous Actions or Situations in the Past My father used to live near the mountains. (not: would live) He used to work as a forest ranger. (not: would work) Past Actions or Situations that No Longer Exist Campsites used to be free; now you have to pay to camp. (not: would be)

uses Examples Past Intentions (Action Completed) I said I was going to get an “A” in English, and I did. Last summer, our family was going to visit friends in Colorado. We did. (Action Not Completed) Last summer, we were going to visit friends in Colorado, but we didn’t have enough time.

Example: Have you cleaned your room yet? -I was going to clean it a while ago, but I didn’t have time -I said I was going to clean it a while ago, and I did Ann/ make a cake/ no sugar Ann was going to make a cake, but she didn’t have any sugar The man/ use the pay phone / no coins The man going to use the pay phone, but he didn’t have coins.

The Past Perfect Tense Simple Sentences
Uses Examples Simple Sentences Until, 1932, the O’Keefes had lived on a farm. Bye the end of 1932, they had already lost their farm and moved to the city. Complex Before the Depression began, the O’keefes had been prosperous farmers. The children had just begun school when their parents lost the farm.
