1 NASCAR ICMS 2011 Debriefing

2 Debriefing – Historical
Historical - EMS CIST (Critical Incident Stress Team ) Assisted members with the emotional aspect surrounding a critical incident Encouraged an open dialogue “Level” organization Recommended professional services

3 Post Incident Historical - EMS Follow-up was occasionally provided
Time off was granted – administrative leave EMS determined the value in discussing, learning from an incident

4 Debriefing Motorsports
Need to collect information Ensure everyone has an opportunity to speak Utilize as a training opportunity Eliminate “surprises” Formal vs. Informal

5 The Past… “Lost” tire… Track worker was not interviewed
Limited to “those involved” Workers felt they were being criticized

6 Comment - Disclaimer The following is how NASCAR would approach the issue.. Organizations are encouraged to develop their own model

7 Components Key Element: Conduct debriefing as a fact finding exercise! Use as training for that track and future events Follow-up is conducted privately and professionally Anticipate hesitancy

8 Administrative Administrative
Establish the meeting location – location must be “large” enough to accommodate all involved All track service workers attend Utilize “sign-in” log – compare to list of actual workers Minimize interference – no time constraints Eliminate media exposure No taping, but take notes

9 Facilitator Who should conduct?
Suggested that a person “not directly” involved in the incident conduct the process… The key is to remain impartial The goal is to be fact-finding

10 Process Start with the initial “dispatch”.. What was transmitted, what did the track service team closest to the incident hear.. Did that prepare them? Initial units arriving.. What was observed, where did they park, what did they see…

11 Process Extrication – Take your time
Who did what – condition of the belts, who cut them, how.. Identify who did what or observed “something” during the extrication process. What did they see if they were in supportive role… every detail accounted for… Until transported Other responding units… Account for Personnel Protective equipment

12 Conclusion of Process Did anyone hear anything?
Anybody have anything to add? – Ensure everyone has an opportunity to speak Remain at debriefing.. You may get approached… Follow-up at a later date...

13 Training Use as a training tool… if the extrication truck indicates that there was an obstruction to their process --- allow the other units to hear that.. so they can react accordingly Take “that information” and incorporate into the respective training program

14 Incidents 2012 Watkins Glen 11/00 Martinsville 56 Talladega 78
Dover – NNS Dover 4 Truck Pocono 60 Martinsville 92

15 Formal vs. Informal Formal – Life Threatening Incident Informal - why?
If the incident did not go smoothly If the incident was “significant” but did not result in an injury If you want to discuss the incident… If there was a fire

16 Comments/Questions You may never know all the answers!! But “collect” as much as possible Process clarity What do with the information? Organization decision…
