3 SEVEN WONDERS Titus 2:11-14

4 “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works” (Titus 2:11-14).

5 SEVEN WONDERS A Wonderful Exhibition

6 “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men” (verse 11).

7 A Wonderful Exhibition
1) Grace defined. “good will, loving-kindness, favour; pre-eminently of that kindness by which God bestows favors even upon the ill- deserving, and grants to sinners the pardon of their offenses, and bids them accept of eternal salvation through Christ” (Thayer).

8 A Wonderful Exhibition
2) Grace is the means of salvation. “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)” (Ephesians 2:4-5).

9 A Wonderful Exhibition
3) Grace is extended to all men. Appeared – “to appear, become visible; fig. i. q. to become clearly known, to show one’s self” (Thayer). “For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:12-13).

10 A Wonderful Exhibition
4) It is by grace that we are taught. “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that…” (verses 11 & 12).

11 SEVEN WONDERS A Wonderful Exhibition A Wonderful Character

12 “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (verse 13).

13 A Wonderful Character 1) Our Savior.
“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

14 A Wonderful Character 2) This tells us that He is God.
“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

15 A Wonderful Character 3) Paul’s description of Jesus.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:5-8).

16 SEVEN WONDERS A Wonderful Exhibition A Wonderful Character
A Wonderful Gift

17 “who gave Himself for us…” (verse 14).

18 A Wonderful Gift 1) A sacrifice on our behalf.
“Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:4-5).

19 A Wonderful Gift 2) The greatest gift that one can give – is Himself.
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command you” (John 15:13-14).

20 A Wonderful Gift 3) This gift is given to the undeserving.
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:8-10).

A Wonderful Gift A Wonderful Work

22 “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify… (verse 14).

23 A Wonderful Work 1) Notice these terms defined.
Redeem – “to redeem, liberate by payment of ransom; to liberate: to cause to be released to one’s self by payment of a ransom, i. e. to redeem; to deliver” (Thayer). Purify – “to make clean, to cleanse; to free from guilt of sin, to purify” (Thayer). Every lawless deed – “contempt and violation of law, iniquity, wickedness” (Thayer).

24 A Wonderful Work 2) The ransom price?
“knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever” (1 Peter 1:18-23).

A Wonderful Gift A Wonderful Work A Wonderful People

26 “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works” (verse 14).

27 A Wonderful People 1) His people are special.
Special – “that which is one’s own, belonging to one’s possessions: a people selected by God from the other nations for his own possession” (Thayer).

28 A Wonderful People 2) We are a special people by purchase.
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

29 A Wonderful People 3) His special people are to be zealous.
Zealous – “most eagerly desirous of, zealous for, a thing” (Thayer). “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

A Wonderful Gift A Wonderful Work A Wonderful People A Wonderful Life

31 “teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts…” (verse 12).

32 A Wonderful Life 1) The things we are to deny.
Denying – “to deny, i. e. abnegate, abjure; to renounce a thing, forsake it” (Thayer). Ungodliness – “wickedness in general, neglect or violation of duty toward God, our neighbor or ourselves, joined with and springing from impiety toward God” (CWSD – NT). Worldly lust – “worldly, i.e. having the character of this present corrupt age” (Thayer). “desire, craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden, lust” (Thayer).

33 A Wonderful Life 2) The way we are to live.
Soberly – “with sound mind, soberly, temperately, discreetly” (Thayer). Righteously – “honestly, without injuring anyone” (CWSD – NT). Godly – “piously, godly” (Thayer). “righteously, attributing to God those things which rightfully belong to Him, rendering to God the reverence and worship emanating from a holy life” (CWSD – NT).

34 A Wonderful Life 3) There are things to put off and things to put on.
“But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:20-24).

36 “looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (verse 13).

37 A Wonderful Prospect 1) Motivation for right living.
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness” (2 Peter 3:10-11).

38 A Wonderful Prospect 2) He will return.
“And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven” (Acts 1:10-11).

39 A Wonderful Prospect 3) His second appearance.
“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation” (Hebrews 9:27-28). “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).
