1 TOC 9/5: Atom Basics Starter:
Draw a basic atom. Label all of the subatomic particles, and the two main parts of it.

2 II. Practice Take Notes!

3 Let’s get familiar with each box on the Periodic Table
11 Na Sodium 23.0 Atomic Number Chemical Symbol Chemical Name Atomic Mass

4 Now, let’s take each piece separately!!

5 Let’s look at the Atomic #
11 Na Sodium 23.0 On our Periodic Table, it’s the # on the TOP Think APE!!! Atomic number = Protons = Electrons

6 At this point we know A=P=E Atomic Number = Protons= Electrons
Let’s Practice!!!

7 LET’S PRACTICE…THINK A=P=E
Atomic number? Number of Protons? Number of Electrons? 8 8 O 8 OXYGEN 16 8

8 Atomic Mass On our Periodic Tables, it’s the number on the bottom. Notice the # is in decimal form. For our purposes, we will round to the nearest whole # 11 Na Sodium 23.0

9 This is what we know: 1. Atomic # (which also tells us the # of Protons & Electrons) 2. Atomic Mass
SO… how do we find the # of Neutrons?

10 M-A=N Mass- Atomic Number = Neutrons

11 Let’s figure it out! 11 Na Sodium 23.0 11 11 11 23 11
What ‘s the Atomic #? How many Protons are there? How many Electrons are there? What is the Atomic mass? What part of the Atomic Mass represents the protons? So, if we have 11 protons in the Atomic Mass, how much mass then must represent the Neutrons? 11 11 11 23 11

12 How do we find Neutrons?? M-A= N
23 11 12 Neutrons

13 Think APE MAN Find the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in Fluorine!! A=P=E protons, 9 electrons M-A=N = 10 Neutrons

14 III. Application Glue in the chart under Application.
Using a pencil & your periodic table, fill in the chart.

15 Chem. Name Chem. Symbol Atomic Number Atomic Mass # of Protons # of Neutrons # of Electrons K 50 36 195 Barium

16 IV. Connection You found an unknown substance that you had analyzed. The chemist discovered it had 79 protons. What did you find AND how did you know? V. Exit In 3-4 sentences, explain what makes every Element on the Periodic Table different.
