1 Principles of Algebra 6th grade math
Welcome to Principles of Algebra 6th grade math Mr. Mormillo

2 Key Points for Curriculum Night
Curriculum Focus Units Homework Expectations Attendance and Assignments Grading Policy Student Expectations Webpage Resources

3 General Areas of Focus Factors, multiples, prime numbers
Decimal, fraction operations Ratios, rates, proportions Unit rates, percentages Algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities Integers and coordinate planes Volume, surface area of 2D and 3D shapes/figures Graphing, analyzing statistical data

4 Standards for Mathematical Practice
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure (Deductive Reasoning) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning (Inductive Reasoning)

5 Carnegie and Mathia The Carnegie workbook is an interactive text that explains concepts and allows students to practice Notes will also be generated in math spirals Most classroom work is group based and is designed to help the student “discover” answers Mathia is the online component that works with the textbook The Carnegie to Mathia ratio is 60:40 Additional skills practice along with student text is located on the 6B team site under “math resources”

6 Homework The purpose of homework is to practice, and/or reinforce concepts we are working on in class. Credit is given for completion, not perfection When students have trouble with homework, they are expected to problem solve using available resources (notes, textbook, websites, logic, reasoning, friends, and parents). If unable to find a solution, they should bring the methods or strategies attempted, and come prepared with questions Homework is assigned in class approximately 2-4 nights per week, and will be posted on the 6B website

7 Absences Homework and assessments must be made up when absent. Students have one day for every day absent to make up homework for credit. When absent, it is the responsibility of the student to: Check the 6B website for class information, assignments and/or notes Copy class notes, complete and turn in missed assignments See teacher to schedule a convenient time to make-up missed assessments

8 Grades Grading Scale: 100-90% = A (You’re there)
89-80% = B (You’re almost there) 79-70% = C (You’re getting close) 69-60% = D (Keep trying, you’ll get there soon) 59% = F (Not yet, but you’ll get there eventually) 80% of overall grade based on assessment scores (tests/quizzes) 20% of overall grade based on practice (homework, practice, and in class assignments)

9 Classroom Expectations
Come prepared and ready to learn Have assignments, homework, and supplies ready, and be on time Be personally responsible and take ownership of your education Advocate for yourself Take all notes, participate in discussions, groups, and activities, and put your best effort into everything you do Help others who need help (when appropriate)

10 Behavior Expectations
Treat others as you would want to be treated Students should remain seated and quiet while teacher or other students are communicating No talking, writing, or fidgeting during this time Listen with an open mind and make appropriate responses No toys! Toys will be confiscated until the end of the year if students have them out in the classroom 1-2-3 Rule 1) Warning 2) Sent outside for a few minutes to reflect ) Lunch detention/ISI

11 Webpages My personal page will have information, games, and activities that pertain to my classroom only The 6B page will have information, a homework calendar, Carnegie resources, and other resources that pertain to the team as a whole The student resource page contains links to many Kyrene programs that students will use throughout the year *Please bookmark these pages for your convenience

12 I can’t wait to get started! I know we will have a great year!
