Spelling Ideas There are many ways to help your child with learning spellings, which we will also be continuing with at school. -It’s important for children to start to see the pattern of letters and build the words. e.g. b ba bad badg badge -Shaving foam squirted on a tray is great fun for children to use their finger to write words. Or bath pens on the tiles at bath time. - Similarly using sand/rice/flour in a tray to write words with their finger.

-Children can practice forming words with magnetic letters or they can try typing them on a computer/Ipad. -Using wool, string or ribbon to make the letters and build words on the floor can be creative. - Children can practice by writing a letter on their partners back and write what they think the letter is on their whiteboard. -For words that are particularly tricky to remember it is sometimes helpful to make up a silly rhyme (mnemonics) e.g. laugh (Little ants under green hedges), although not too many else it becomes too hard to remember!

Plurals Children need to remember the rules for changing nouns from singular to plural. They have been taught that if a word ends in ‘ch’ ‘sh’ or ‘x’ that they add an ‘es’ to the word instead of just an ‘s’ e.g. fox – foxes church – churches brush – brushes The children are not expected to know the irregular plurals e.g mouse - mice

Suffix A suffix is a group of letters that can be added to the end of a root word. Different suffixes have different meanings so, when you add a suffix to a word, you change its meaning and make a new word. Children are required to use words using the suffix: er, est, ness, ed, less, ful, ly er and est add on to an adjective er – longer , slower , quicker , smaller est – longest, slowest, quickest, smallest bravest, happiest, hottest (rule change) ed and ing add on to a verb to change the tense. ed – jumped, picked, laughed, tickled, clapped ing- jumping, picking, laughing, tickling, clapping Each suffix follows a rule

If a word ends in ‘y’ e. g. happy you drop the ‘y’ and add an ‘i’ e. g
If a word ends in ‘y’ e.g. happy you drop the ‘y’ and add an ‘i’ e.g. happier. If a word ends in an ‘e’ e.g. late, you drop the ‘e’ before adding the suffix e.g. ’later’ If a word ends in one vowel (a,e,i,o,u) and one consonant then you double the last letter e.g. flat becomes flatter. Children need to understand how the meaning of the word can change when they use different suffixes

Past tense Children need to be able to use the present and past tense when writing, this is equally important in their speech e.g. The pearl falled (fell) to the bottom of the sea. He runned (ran) to the shop. I buyed (bought) some sweets.

could/should/would have not of
