1 The study of space, celestial objects, and the universe.
ASTRONOMY The study of space, celestial objects, and the universe.

2 What is wrong with this picture?

3 Why does the Moon look like it changes shape when we look at it from Earth?

4 So what happens to a wall behind you if there is a bright light, like the Sun, shining in front of you?

5 If the Sun shines on the side facing the Moon, what happens to the other side of the Moon?
Is it a shadow? NO! From our perspective, or line of sight, the Moon seems to phase in and phase out because of the movement and alignment of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon!

6 phases of the moon that are in our “line of sight” from Earth.
Alignment means arrangement in straight lines or in relative positions. There are eight phases of the moon that are in our “line of sight” from Earth. PHASES OF THE MOON

7 Just remember this… ”Wax On!” and “Wane Off!”
Waxing Moon Waning Moon When the moon is in a waxing phase, it appears to be getting larger in size. When the moon is in a waning phase, it appears to be getting smaller in size. Just remember this… ”Wax On!” and “Wane Off!”

8 Crescent Moon Gibbous Moon
Crescent moons look similar to a croissant in shape. The illuminated part of a crescent moon is SMALLER than a half moon. Gibbous moons look similar to a ball that is partially deflated. The illuminated part of a gibbous moon is BIGGER than a half moon.

9 The Lunar Month A LUNAR MONTH is the time the moon takes to pass through a complete cycle of its phases and is measured from New Moon to New Moon. A lunar month is about 29 days.
