From our perspective, or line of sight, the Moon seems to phase in and phase out because of the movement and alignment of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon!

When the moon is in a waxing phase, it appears to be getting larger in size.
When the moon is in a waning phase, it appears to be getting smaller in size.

8. Crescent Moon Gibbous Moon
Crescent moons look similar to a croissant in shape. The illuminated part of a crescent moon is SMALLER than a half moon.
Gibbous moons look similar to a ball that is partially deflated. The illuminated part of a gibbous moon is BIGGER than a half moon.

9. The Lunar Month
A LUNAR MONTH is the time the moon takes to pass through a complete cycle of its phases and is measured from New Moon to New Moon. A lunar month is about 29 days.
