Chapter 17 WAVES I- Properties of Waves. A- Waves Carry Energy 1- Waves do not carry matter.
3
All Waves can be described by the same set of properties.
B- Describing Waves All Waves can be described by the same set of properties. 4-Wavelength 3- Amplitude 1- Crest 3- Amplitude 2- Trough 4-Wavelength
4
Properties of Waves. 1- Crest = Highest point of Wave
2- Trough = Lowest point of wave 3- Amplitude = Distance from dash line to crest or trough, it tells how much energy a wave has. More height more energy. 4- Wavelength = distance from crest to crest or trough to trough.

5- Frequency: The number of waves that pass a point in a certain amount of time. The unit is Hertz (Hz) One wave per second
8
II- Wave Motion: A- Transverse Waves: Cause matter to move perpendicularly to the waves direction (Up & Down)
9
B- Compressional Waves: Causes. matter to move parallel to the waves
B- Compressional Waves: Causes matter to move parallel to the waves direction (Back & Forth) Sound waves. 1-Rarefaction: when a compressional wave spread apart = Trough 2- Compression = Crest
10
III- Behavior of Waves:
A- Wave refraction is the bending of a wave as it enters a new material, the waves speed changes.
11
B- Wave reflection: The wave bounces
B- Wave reflection: The wave bounces off the surface at the same angle but opposite direction.
12
C- Polarized waves: the waves crest and troughs move in one perpendicular direction.
13
D- Interference: Is the result of different waves moving through one another.
14
IV- Electromagnetic Spectrum: Tells the different frequency of the waves.
15
A- How the High –Energy Waves Affect Us.
1- Gamma rays- used to kill cancer cells. 2- X-rays - used to see bones. 3- Ultraviolet - used to sterilize objects also gives you a tan.
16
B- Using Low-Energy Waves: Light waves are waves that people can see
1- Light Waves = to see 2-Infrared Waves = Heat 3- Microwaves = Cooking
17
4- Radio waves = LONGEST WAVES
