2. A The placement of a hard sleeve and strainer directly
into a water source requires engine placement near
the water source—slightly at an angle.

5. D The hard sleeve and strainer are attached to the
pumper’s inlet and the engine moves forward as
the crew positions the sleeve into the water.

6. E If a non-floating strainer is used, the rope also keeps the strainer from resting on the bottom. Non-floating strainers should be well under the water’s surface to prevent drawing in of air. When in place, the engine is stopped, the line is secured, and drafting operations begin.
