Roles Substantive Committee – Takes the laboring oar. Assembles a team, assigns a project chair, prepares proposal, performs all research, drafting, and most editing. B&T – 1 Vice Chair guides substantive committee through the process, provides final edits before book goes to Council. Council – Final review and approval.

The Proposal Description – Why is the book needed? Table of Contents – How will the book be organized? Team Leaders – Who will be in charge of the book and each chapter? Proposed Schedule – How long will it take?

Drafting and Editing Issues
Issues to plan for in advance to avoid derailing your book: Delays Insufficient updating Problems with format and style

Avoid delays by checking in with authors regularly.
Regular team calls Reach out to team members individually Loop in B&T at the first sign of a problem Move quickly to get extra help if needed

Quick Reference Guide Abbreviations (Spell out first use in each chapter) Capitalization (Actual names, not general references) Punctuation (Em dashes, curly quotes, spaced ellipsis) Case Names (Full cite at first reference) Citations (Lexis/WL cites omit case number and date; include case cites for descriptions of legal holdings / arguments, not facts; make sure any legal discussion is supported with a citation) Footnotes (5-footnote rule; spacing for long URLs; full case cites not italicized; short-form case cites italicized) Cross-references (Reference by section not by page)

Style and Format Draft in template, then run the macros. Available on Publications page in the Leadership portal (with instructions): Use the Formatting Guide at pages of the Style Guide. Use a Word version of a finalized handbook.

Objectivity Standard See Style Guide, page 5 (“OBJECTIVITY”)
Section books are “descriptive rather than prescriptive.” Drafters must “report the law, not comment on it subjectively.” “[T]he drafter’s view of the wisdom or correctness of any decision is inappropriate.” Any contextual matter “must be presented in a balanced manner.” New: Practice tips are now permitted Consider doing X if Y happens. If you do X, opposing counsel may respond by doing Y. X can be difficult, so consider Y instead.
