So does that mean… Could you explain how… What I don’t quite understand is…

14 Third Listening 建议: 在第三次听之前教师可先用2-3分钟引导学生预测这三空所需功能句,这有利 于提高学生实际运用这些功能句的能力, 从而为后面的活动做更充分的准备. Listen to the interview again and complete the function file with the expressions. And tonight she’s in the studio for an interview with us, well, (1)____________she’s here on screen, of course, because she’s not real, she’s a virtual character-just an image. (2) _________ it’s not a real interview. (3) ________________ Is that we sent the questions to her programmers in advance. What I mean is Is that clear? What I’m trying to say

15 (4) _________________ your creators decided what you should look like?
Listen to the interview again and complete the function file with the expressions. (4) _________________ your creators decided what you should look like? 17 Post listening ------ Pair work
Tom and Jerry are two robot fans, recently they have just finished their new creations--- a robot guard dog and a robot friend. And they couldn’t wait any longer to show each other their creations. Now, work in pairs to complete the following two conversations between them, trying to use the functional sentences as many as possible. Attention: some samples are given. VS

18 Tom’s robot guard dog 1. A quite small metal dog
Pair work 1. A quite small metal dog (80cm high, weigh 25 kilos) 2. Moves fast on flat surface, even goes upstairs (40 k/ph, ten small wheels on the bottom, spring like a kangaroo) 3. Useful for guarding the house (can recognize owner’s and friends’ voice; can make a loud bark to frighten thieves / burglars, even use two metal claws to “bite” them; cheaper than a real guard dog without being fed) 4. Calls for help in case of danger, rescue a child from many dangerous situations (directly phone the police) 5. Is it intelligent? (Not really, relies on programming but cute than a real guard dog) 跳跃

19 Sample I: T: My robot guard dog is quite a “small”
metal dog, which can move fast on flat surface and even go upstairs. J: Really, how small? And What I don’t quite understand is how it can move fast on flat surface and even go upstairs ? T: Well, I mean it is only 80cm high, and just weighs 25 kilos, but can move 40 k/ph by its ten small wheels on the bottom and spring like a kangaroo to go upstairs. J: Cool, please go ahead. T: Well, it can / is …

20 Jerry’s robot friend Pair work 1. Three sizes to choose from
(basket ball player, normal, child size) 2. Recognizes its owner’s feelings (use cameras to see facial expressions and body language) 3. Talks to people about anything; tells jokes to cheer you up; shares happy time with you; is also a good listener. (talks about sports, music, films, and so on in ten languages; has 1,000 jokes programmed; enjoys films, sports, games, etc. together with you ; listens to your worries and gives good advice you want. ) 4. Does small domestic chores (make your bed, fold your clothes, take our the trash, walk and feed your dog) 5. Is it intelligent ? (probably more intelligent than us)

21 Sample II: J: Hey, you know, My robot friend has 3 sizes
to choose from. T: Wow, fantastic. But could you explain what are the 3 sizes ? J: Well, the robot has basketball player, normal and child sizes, all of which can recognize its owner’s feelings. T: Really, but What I don’t quite understand is how can it manage to do so? J: See, it uses cameras to see facial expressions and body language of its owner. Is that clear? T: Yeah, and…

22 class, then write them down on your exercise books.
Assignment: Polish the two conversations made in class, then write them down on your exercise books.
