Story Map Let’s read “When Gertrude Grew Great” as a class so we can figure out what parts of the story fit into the story map.

Setting – Answers the questions when and where and sets up the scene.
Example At a middle school in the present day. 10 years into the future. Example An averaged sized house in an average size neighborhood in a typical town. A middle school. 10 years in the future.

Plot - the action of the story; what is causing the drama within the story; the important events.
Example Gertrude does just enough to get by at home and at school. Gertrude talks to her teacher, but chooses to stop listening to him.

Resolution - the solution to the problem, or conflict.
Example Gertrude decides to try harder and is happy in the future

Characters - The person/people/things in the story that carry out the action.

Conflict – Something that has gone wrong or a struggle in the plot. It can be an internal conflict. Example Gertrude only wanted to live an average life.

Example Always do your best. Never settle.
