1 Volume of Cylinders 7.03

2 Volume! What is the process for calculating the volume of an object with two identical bases?

3 Volume! Can you imagine that mathematicians write that process out each time they calculate volume? Of course not! There is a formula that explains it (woohoo!)

4 Volume Formula for Two Base Shapes
Volume = Area of Base shape times the number of layers (Height of figure) V = B · H

5 Popcorn! What shape do popcorn containers come in?

6 Movie Time I will be hosting movie night with my nieces and nephews.
We always do a craft before the movie and I want the kids to make personalized popcorn containers this time. I’m planning to give them one sheet of thick paper to roll into a cylinder and then cover the bottom with plastic wrap so they can fill it with popcorn. I know Izzy is going to ask me which way to roll the paper so that it holds the most popcorn possible. Help!

7 Which way will hold more?
Look at the two possible cylinders. Which one do you think will hold more or do you think they will hold an equal amount? Justify your thinking to your partner.

8 Which way will hold more?
Justify to the class. Put your heads down and vote!

9 Diagram time! Draw a diagram of each cylinder on your paper and label any information you know. Check out my fabulous drawings on the board when you’re done. Based on your drawings, which one do you think will have a bigger volume?

10 Let’s test it out! (You shouldn’t be reading this…you should be watching me…)

11 Why did that happen? Follow along with me on the board to figure out the math reasoning for our result.
