Essential Components of Effective Rhetoric
Audience - The person(s) hearing one’s argument (sometimes the intended audience, in the case of written works) Purpose - A goal that one takes deliberate steps to achieve; a desired end result Claim – A position on a specific issue supported with reasons and evidence. A claim can be stated directly or inferred.

Appeals Ethos - Attempts to establish one’s credibility, competence, and respect for the audience’s ideas and values Pathos - Attempts to appeal to the audience’s emotions Logos - Attempts to appeal to the audience’s logic Mythos - Attempts to connect with the audience by using culturally significant stories to support or defend one’s argument

Rhetorical devices Analogy – a detailed comparison between dissimilar things to explain an unfamiliar idea in terms of a familiar one Rhetorical Question – question to which no answer is expected Antithesis – puts sharply contrasting words, phrases, clauses, or sentences near one another to emphasize a point, often using parallel grammatical structure Look for antonyms as well as words or phrases that show a contrast
