Microsoft Visio 2010: A New Generation of the Tool for Corporate Diagramming and Greening
Šenaj Lelić managing Director maguro DataAssist GmbH Session Code: OFS213
3
Session – a few hints This session is NOT about features or functions lists There‘s enough whitepapers on this ;-) This session is about concepts Using features in the right way How can functions easen your daily life and work Where Visio 2010 leverages corporate diagramming to a new level of data encapsulation and validation/evaluation Green IT benefits from Visio NEXT: Agenda Visio 2010 and Green IT
4
Agenda Visio 2010 and Green IT
Visio 2010 – an new Generation of Visio What‘s new ? Whats old ? A quick glance at what‘s new in an overview Structure your diagrams with containers Let Visio check your diagrams with rules Visio Services – server-side Visio publishing NEXT: Agenda Visio 2010 and Green IT - 2
5
Agenda Visio 2010 and Green IT - 2
Green IT requirements – how does Visio fit in? Demo: Excel or System Center R2 (RC) Excel or SCOM with Visio 2010 Publishing the information with Visio services Demo: Rack Virtualisation/Visualisation Demo: what can you do more ? More on visualisation in the Visio 2010 times Toolbox and Green Visio booklet NEXT: Visio 2010 – a new generation of Visio
6
Visio 2010 – a new generation of Visio
7
Visio 2010 the diagramming standard
Visio: THE standard for corporate diagramming The basic idea: intelligent, data-driven objects We‘re talking about Shapes Were still talking about shape data or shape properties Of All-time favourites of user requests most of them are delivered and extended in Visio 2010 NEXT: Visio 2010 easier diagramming
8
Visio 2010 – easier diagramming
Makes easy corporate diagramming possible while maintaining the old concepts: OLD: Visio Shapes reside on a page NEW: the page stretches to the size needed automatically OLD: Visio diagrams are connected diagrams NEW: Visio can check for the technical accuracy of the connected diagram by rules defined by the user OLD: the user places the shapes on the page NEW: Visio has some smart ways of helping with the best layout NEXT: Visio 2010 more about your data
9
Visio 2010 – more about your data
Helps the user in standard scenarios to achieve the desired result faster: OLD: The user stores object data in the Shape NEW: Shapes respond if necessary data is missing, either graphically or by showing breaks of rules OLD: The user has his set of shapes NEW: Visio prioritizes the shapes the user wants to use most by adding them to the QuickShapes-list NOW LET‘S SEE SOMETHING! NEXT: DEMO: creating a network diagram

11
Demo summary We‘re still talking about
Shapes that are added to a page Visio pages being the container for a diagram Shape-data that extends the model/diagram But now we are also talking about Quicker diagram creation by quickshapes Individual page sizes fitting to the model without time-wasting „file->Page Setup-> pagesize“ NEXT: Visio and data - take 2010
12
Visio and data Data is the No 1 key concept that differentiates Visio from other drawing tools: The data reside within the shapes Now: where does the information come from ? Usually: manual entry -> time consuming and error prone Visio can import data from literally any structured datasource SharePoint, Access, Excel or any other OLEDB/ODBC source NEXT: DEMO load live-data in your diagram
13

14
Data connectivity and beyond
Now that the data resides in the diagram there‘s still a few potential issues in everyday-use Not every Visio user is an IT professional Not every Visio user does this every day We need an easy way to structure the diagrams and show lower dependencies between objects E.g.: all servers that are delivering our intranet, or all servers being part of our mail-system Solution: containers - the easy way to structure your diagram NEXT: defining rules for diagram looks or reaction
15
Define rules on how the diagram should look like or react
Is there some data still missing (e.g. after the import from a source?) E.g. Memory, Hard drive space and inventory number MUST be in every shape for proper reporting Are there connections not fully established between shapes? E.g. each server must have an incoming connection Each cable (connector) must be connected on both sides NEXT: Demo: diagram rules and containers
16
Extend your diagram with rules and container-based reports
demo Extend your diagram with rules and container-based reports Šenaj Lelić managing Director maguro DataAssist GmbH
17
After the diagram creation
Now we got the diagram in place How do we make it available to others in a simple way but still „working“ Everybody should see the diagram Changes in vital data must be updateable so changes/visual extensions are updated (e.g. DataGraphics ) The viewers should not be able to modify the diagram NEXT: publishing diagrams to Visio services
18
Visio Services at a glance
Server-side Visio Running inside of Microsoft SharePoint Read-Only View on Visio diagrams BUT: WITH update of DataGraphics NO changes to Visio file possible Programming API for small updates of Views is available NEXT: DEMO – publish your diagram to Visio Services
19
Publish your diagram to Visio services

20
Green IT requirements – how does Visio fit in ?
Visio is the ideal tool for Green-IT documentation Objects in the real world map to shapes Data for our GreenIT resides in properties / shape data Proper evaulation and reporting of vital data is supported through Graphical visualisers (DataGraphics) Reporting features (Excel, HTML etc) The user deals with his data not with IT concepts NEXT: Demo Visio connection to Excel
21
Šenaj Lelić managing Director maguro DataAssist GmbH
demo Connecting Visio to a Excel file (e.g. updated from System Center R2 data store) Šenaj Lelić managing Director maguro DataAssist GmbH
22
Demo summary Connecting is easy
Visio retrieves the data from System Center and visualises it in a simple way in Visio diagrams The data still resides in System Center AND Visio Diagram evaluations and reports can easilly be done Yet to come: SCOM R2 Addin for Visio BUT WAIT: there‘s more – how about racks ? NEXT: Rack visualisation with Visio
23
Rack virtualisation/visualisation with Visio 2010
demo Rack virtualisation/visualisation with Visio 2010 Šenaj Lelić managing Director maguro DataAssist GmbH
24
Demo summary Racks are „packs of data“ about all different components
Visio is the ideal tool to bring this data in a „visual format“ Evaluation and reporting are fully available but you dont need to work with lines of text or excel rows – just with graphical objects ;-) BUT WAIT – there‘s more: how about other non-directly IT related issues? NEXT: all This green IT with VIsio
25
All this Green-IT documentation
Needs to be defined just once when the system is built Live-data can be added/updated in the diagrams periodically The users use the diagram for monitoring – they dont have to care about the creation/modification just because some internal data has changed NEXT: Publish your green IT documentation to the portal
26
The Visio toolbox – online all about Visio
Where do we get more information on real-time solutions The online source for applied Visio solutions Downloads (many free) of IT-related tools Downloads of many demo-solutions NEXT: question and answers
