Metamorphic Rocks
2
Word Connections Metamorphic Meta - change Morph-change form
Morphic- form
3
How are Metamorphic rocks formed?
The deeper into Earth’s layers the greater the pressure and heat. Occurs deep beneath Earth’s surface Changed by extreme heat and pressure Don’t confuse with igneous Metamorphic rocks from much deeper inside the earth
6
Connection to Plate Tectonics
Earth’s plates collide and push rock down toward the heat of the mantle. (subduction of two oceanic plates)
7
(extreme) High temperatures change the size and shape of the rock grains.
8
Pressure!!!! Before metamorphism After metamorphism Pressure causes grains to line up in flat/ parallel layers
9
Rock grains changing due to pressure
10
Different types of grains under fluorescence
11
Rock grains changed after metamorphism
12
Folliated=parallel folliated- grains arranged in parallel layers
13
All three types of rock can become a metamorphic rock
Igneous-metamorphic Sedimentary-metamorphic Metamorphic-metamorphic
14
How are they classified
By the way the grains are arranged
15
What happens ? Total change Appearance Texture Crystal structure
Mineral content
16
Types of Metamorphic Rock
Shale turns into slate. Sandstone turns into quartzite Granite turns into gneiss
17
Metamorphic Banding Caused by extreme pressure!!!
19
Uses/Real world Connections
marble buildings statues slate flooring roofing walkways chalkboards
