After WW I: Britain, France, USA powerful. Europe issues: rebuilding land jobs for vets Britain Issue: Socialism and Irish question USA: Red Scare

3 France worried about Germany creates Maginot Line and insists on strict enforcement of the Versailles Treaty.

4 Many countries sign Kellogg-Briand Pact renouncing war as an instrument of national policy. Great powers pursued disarmament policy. Neither KB Pact nor League of Nations had power to stop aggression.

6 Post War Economies Brit and France owe massive war debt to USA. Used reparation payments from Germany to pay loans. Brits high debt, high unemployment, low wages led to strike by 3 million Brit workers for nine days.

Socialism- system in which the people as a whole rather than private individuals own all property and operate all businesses. Fascism-any authoritarian Gov. that is not communist whose policies glorify the state over individuals and are destructive to human rights. Totalitarianism- gov in which a one-party dictatorship regulates every part of citizen’s life.
