Pope Urban II Pope urban II was the calling of the first crusade at Clermont in Urban II thought that western military assistance was necessary to help the Byzantine Empire under attack from Islam's armies. In 1095 he traveled to the Council of Clermont in France. The knights responded to the Popes announcement of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land by chanting “God Wills It”.

Saladin Saladin was the leader of the third crusade. Saladin used the idea of the holy war to bring the Muslims together. He was the leader of the Muslims. Saladin failed to capture Tyre.

Saint Bernard Bernard of Clairvaux wanted to take up the cross. He started a monastery and was a leader of the second crusade. He was a famous preacher and monk of the middle ages.
