Year 12 Social November Test

2 Q11. Research into obedience can be conducted in an ethical manner
Q11. Research into obedience can be conducted in an ethical manner. Assess this claim (8 marks) Common mistake: Using research from prejudice (i.e. Sherif or Tajfel) Using the term ‘moral strain’ rather than psychological harm Only Milgram (original or variations) and Burger can be used Key points would be based on ethical guidelines Structure: PEC Conclusion Or PEC (very detailed – perhaps providing evidence from both studies) PEC (very detailed) Conclusion Evidence (research or theories) is always necessary Assess, evaluate, to what extent all require conclusions

3 Examples Key points would be based on ethical guidelines
i.e. deception Milgram or Burger deceived participants Evidence: how did they do this? Comment: why is this necessary in research? Link back to the question – can research be conducted in an ethical manner? This paragraph would suggest that it can’t i.e. BPS Guidelines can be followed i.e. right to withdraw, debrief other safeguards Evidence: how did Burger do this? Why did he do this? Comment: does this mean it is possible to conduct ethically acceptable research?

4 Conclusion: a judgement is necessary
Refer to the claim – can research be conducted in an ethical manner? Ensure this conclusion matched the research you have provided but do not provide a summary Don’t use the first person

6 2 A) Agency theory and application
How was Rachel autonomous (explain this using the scenario) Why did she experience moral strain? How did this lead to the agentic shift? Explain why we know she was in the agentic state What would have happened to her sense of responsibility? Displacement of responsibility B) SIN – all factors have to be explained as you are being asked about theory not a part of the theory (should be answers in the same structure as above) C) Why is someone different to someone else? Individual differences – i.e. locus of control Rachel, who is a student in sixth form, was asked by her principal to pick up a parcel from reception even though she was running late to attend maths club. Rachel picks up the parcel before going to maths club. a) Using the agency theory explain why Rachel decided to obey the principal. (4 marks) b) Using the social impact theory explain why Rachel decided to obey the principal. (4 marks) c) Explain why another student may refuse to follow the order from the principal. (2 marks)

7 3. Explain the difference between prejudice and discrimination
3. Explain the difference between prejudice and discrimination. (2 marks) Key word here is difference Common mistake: providing a definition of each without making clear how the terms are different (1 mark if the definitions are both correct) 2 marks if the difference is clear To ensure you have a good chance at that extra mark use connecting words such as where as to indicate the difference.

8 4. Explain one strength and one weakness of the social identify theory
4. Explain one strength and one weakness of the social identify theory. (4 marks) Reminder on structure: Point – strength or weakness based on SODAR Justification – why is this a strength or weakness?

9 5 Two groups of students at a school are competing to win a football cup. Teachers have had to break up fights and they have been telling the students off because of name calling. a) Using the realistic conflict theory explain why this has happened. (4 marks) b) Explain one way the teachers can help resolve the hostility between the groups. (2 marks) A) Application - so the scenario must be used to explain the RCT In enough detail for 4 marks 2 groups – students competing against each other at a football match Limited resource – what does this mean? Why does this lead to prejudice and discrimination? Example from scenario – the cup How does this lead to discrimination? Example from the scenario – name calling and fights B) superordinate goals – expand by providing an example (relevant to the scenario)for the second mark
